Results for Qualifying Round 3MADISON, Ill. - ST. LOUIS - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 11th annual O’Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 6.274/233.48, Now #8 Best prior run: 11.279/74.59, Was #21 Right Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 6.311/226.85, Now #10 Best prior run: 7.605/211.10, Was #20This is the last chance for the Pro Mods to come to grips with a difficult track. As proved by the Pro Stock cars, there is plenty of traction as long as you stay in the groove and don't try to take more than is there.
The track has been in full sunshine for about 15 or 20 minutes.
Both cars make straight, smooth passes so look for a lot of moving around in the qualified order.Left Lane: Zach Barklage Runs 6.498/215.20, Now #13 Best prior run: 6.965/216.06, Was #19 Right Lane: Shelly Payne Runs 12.734/63.48, Now #21 Best prior run: 7.043/149.20, Was #21Shelly gets loose on the way to 330 and will not make the show.Left Lane: John Deflorian Runs 7.413/163.18, Now #18 Best prior run: 6.847/210.54, Was #18 Right Lane: Bryan Seward No Time, Now #20 Best prior run: 7.036/151.46, Was #20Local chassis guru Deflorian was just bumped out and needs to get back in. He's got a lot of experience in both Pro Stock and Pro Mod.
Seward leaves before the tree comes down and that seemed to give John a case of the yips as he double pumped. Bad news in both lanes as neither makes the show.Left Lane: Doug Palmer Runs 10.676/111.77, Now #17 Best prior run: 6.674/225.00, Was #17 Right Lane: Dan Saitz Runs 19.054/42.97, Now #19 Best prior run: 6.930/188.75, Was #19Saitz is still trying to get a handle on his super trick twin turbo Mustang. It's capable of huge numbers when all goes right.
Both cars shake hard and are off the throttle by 60 foot.Left Lane: Raymond Vettel Runs 6.641/210.97, Now #16 Best prior run: 6.638/213.27, Was #16 Right Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.154/235.76, Now #1 Best prior run: 6.467/219.29, Was #12A very strong, but very crooked, pass for Troy. The car makes a move to the centerline at about 500 feet and then waggled back and forth a couple of times after that. Critchley uses his experience to get the car to the other end and posts the top ET so far.
Vettel stays on the bump.Left Lane: Cody Barklage No Time, Now #15 Best prior run: 6.632/228.54, Was #15 Right Lane: Mike Janis No Time, Now #12 Best prior run: 6.368/235.15, Was #12Janis gets the crowd talking with a very loose run right alongside the centerline. Unfortunately, his tightrope act got ugly right at the finish line as he collects the cone.
Barklage was on a good pass. From looking at the incrementals, it probably would have been a mid teen but with the timing block MIA he doesn't get a time. Very tough break for Cody.Left Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 8.730/99.80, Now #8 Best prior run: 6.252/233.32, Was #8 Right Lane: Steve Engel No Time, Now #10 Best prior run: 6.281/232.47, Was #10Engel can't get his car fired no matter how much gas is squirted into the hat.
Actually, it does finally start but the staging officials had already counted him out and instructed Stivers to take a single.
Stivers gets real loose about 400 feet and lifts.Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 6.188/234.86, Now #4 Best prior run: 6.221/234.13, Was #7 Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 13.347/63.70, Now #7 Best prior run: 6.220/227.15, Was #6Ray is very loose off the line and shuts off.
No visible problems with Hagan.Left Lane: Raymond Commisso Runs 6.727/160.90, Now #6 Best prior run: 6.205/235.64, Was #6Commisso is on a nice pass, and being safely in the field, steps off just after the eighth-mile clocks.Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 12.516/79.42, Now #3 Best prior run: 6.183/233.88, Was #3 Right Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 6.261/231.00, Now #2 Best prior run: 6.182/230.84, Was #2Payne's rpms go straight up as he leaves and he shuts off at 150 feet.
Pontieri lays down a nice pass.
