The big brutes fire up for their last session. If we've learned anything from the previous sessions, it's that there is a great track for the taking if the setup is right.
Just like the other classes, the racers who don't overpower the starting line should go fast.
Pontieri gets SO close.
King rattles the tires hard.Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.012/217.98, Now #2 Best prior run: 6.906/151.63, Was #20 Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 7.756/168.32, Now #21 Best prior run: 8.506/113.41, Was #21The track has been under full sun all day, but is still only a very raceable 110 degrees.
Janis tiptoes off the line and it pays off. Hagan is all over the track.Left Lane: William Rojas Runs 8.542/121.98, Now #20 Best prior run: 6.874/234.21, Was #20 Right Lane: Isaias Rojas Runs 6.224/224.58, Now #16 Best prior run: 6.255/224.96, Was #18Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.825/222.66, Now #19 Best prior run: 6.716/152.28, Was #19 Right Lane: Mike Bell Runs 6.076/234.37, Now #10 Best prior run: 6.251/228.46, Was #18Bell makes a nice pass, but Payne's was real ugly. The car shook hard and moved to the left. Probably a less-experienced driver would have collected the wall but Jay managed to tiptoe along it a few inches away.
All that for nothing, as Payne fails to qualify.Left Lane: Zach Barklage Runs 6.084/232.43, Now #11 Best prior run: 6.219/229.66, Was #16 Right Lane: Eddie Ware Runs 12.941/70.94, Now #18 Best prior run: 6.232/231.36, Was #18Ware heads straight right but manages to keep it off the wall. Stawicki makes one of the session's better looking passes.Left Lane: Dan Rowe Runs 16.613/46.90, Now #6 Best prior run: 6.042/236.17, Was #4 Right Lane: Cody Barklage No Time, Now #11 Best prior run: 6.068/236.75, Was #7Barklage breaks and pushes back.

Results for Elimination Round 1GAINESVILLE, Fla. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 38th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals: W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed (W) Steve Engel (Diamond Heavy Haul '63 Corvett 0.066 6.009 239.36 (L) Mike Stawicki (Snapcase *'63 Corvette) 0.091 6.038 237.38Well, we should have plenty of track if the crew chiefs can get the starting line right.I wouldn't be surprised to see some big MPH rolling in during this session.
Good leave for both cars and Engel gets very close to the fives.
(W) Dan Rowe (InfiNet *'63 Corvette) 0.080 6.006 225.33 (L) Shelly Payne (Valvoline/BAE '05 Stratus) -0.035(R) 6.839 163.81Rowe uses his lane choice to take the right lane.Shelly lights the bulb and Rowe almost gives it back as he almost crosses the center line at the big end. No harm, no foul, but it was a nasty looking correction.
(W) Raymond Commisso ('67 Camaro) 0.109 5.986 242.63 (L) Cody Barklage (Mark Barklage Drywall '05 GT 0.100 7.803 139.73Here's a couple of hitters matching up so watch the mile per hour.Lane choice to Raymond and he's in the right.
Cody is loose off the line and watches Commisso get his five.
(W) Mike Bell (Roy Hill Racing *'07 Mustang) 0.071 6.049 235.64 (L) John Russo ('68 Camaro) 0.098 6.101 238.89Bell has been a winner in just about every class he's raced and is looking to further his rep as a tough driver here in Roy Hill's Mustang. And Bell pulls off the upset against the higher qualified car. Bell made a strong move off the line where Russo was running in and out of shake.
(W) Mike Janis (Eaton *'06 Cobalt) 0.068 5.964 237.67 (L) Zach Barklage ('57 Chevy) 0.024 6.090 230.33Barklage is very loose of the line and loses to Janis' first five.Janis has lane choice over Bell tomorrow in second round.
(W) Tony Pontieri ('57 Bel Air) 0.112 6.120 201.49 (L) Tim Tindle ('67 Mustang) 0.085 15.483 50.39Pontieri got about as close to a five with his 6.007 as you can get. With a good setup, he's due. It's not going to happen.
Tindall broke before 100 feet. Pontieri made a lurid move at about 900 feet and they're checking the track to see if he crossed the lane.
We get the word that he did not cross the line. He'll lose lane choice to fellow Canadian Commisso next time up.
(W) Josh Hernandez ('68 Camaro) 0.075 5.912 242.63 (L) Rick Stivers (Stivers HVAC '67 Camaro) 0.104 7.120 186.25Hernandez had the huge MPH last time out. Can he improve? No, he doesn't run the MPH but he does run the quickest ET in AMS history.
Yes, he has lane choice against Rowe.
(W) Troy Critchley (AMS Staff Leasing '70 Barra 0.071 5.924 245.81 (L) Bryan Seward (Value Performance '04 Mustang 0.135 6.524 222.80Stivers' white cloud past half track wasn't good for anybody. The Safari is rolling everything they have. 7:18 p.m.7:31 p.m. and the signal to fire the cars is given.
The track has been in full shade for quite a while as the sun is setting behind the tower. It's cooling rapidly.
Can Critchely get hooked up enough to improve on that earlier 245?
Yes he can, by a little bit. He picks lanes over Engel.
Troy Critchley's incremental times: 60ft-0.999 sec., 330ft-2.621, 660ft-3.913/193.18mph, 1,000ft-5.005
That ends round one.
