Brainerd International Raceway team defends NHRA West Central Summit title
BRAINERD, Minn. - After three days of non-stop action on their home track the team from Brainerd International Raceway (B.I.R.) took the coveted NHRA Summit Racing Series West Central Division Team Championship Sunday, showing little hospitality to racers visiting the race track from all over the Northern Plains states. It was the second West Central Division title in a row for the B.I.R. team, backing up their victory of 2004 in Topeka, Kan.
Helping the team to the overall top points total was individual Motorcycle/Snowmobile Champion Donnie Durenberger, of Dayton, Minn. He turned back Omaha, Neb., rider Curtis Spracklin in the final, the Suzuki getting the better of the Kawasaki.
In other individual action, Larry Demers, of Carroll, Iowa, and Team Nebraska Motorplex, drove his '88 Corvette into the winner's circle with a final round victory over Milt Gedo, all the way from Pahrump, Nev. In Pro E.T., the win went to Gary Schueneman, of Elko, Minn., and Team Grove Creek Raceway. He drove his '79 Chevy Malibu to a win over Phil Watkins, who races out of Wichita, Kan., with his '71 El Camino.
The Sportsman title fell to Team Bandimere Speedway runner Dustin Travis, of Westminster, Colo., in a '64 Ford. He beat Jim Hook Knebel's '70 Olds Cutlass in the final. The High School trophy went to Tri-State Raceway team member Tyler Risse, a student in Waterloo, Iowa. He drove his '83 Buick Regal to victory in the final with a win over Alex Lindholm, of Pierre, S.D. Lindholm drives a 1968 American Motors AMX.
Besides the more than $15,000 in prizes up for grabs at B.I.R., the winners in each individual race category now qualify to compete at the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Finals in November during the NHRA Automobile Club of Southern California Finals at Pomona Raceway. In Pomona the West Central Division champs will join champions from NHRA six other geographic regions to compete for national championships.
On Saturday, Arnie Ozols, of Prior Lake, Minn., and Craig Vogt, of Mead, Neb., took Race of Champions titles.
Ozols drove his '66 Pontiac Tempest to a victory of Oakland, Neb., driver Jeff Landholm's '68 Camaro to take the Race of Champions title in the car division. Meanwhile, Vogt rode his '73 Kawasaki to the motorcycle/snowmobile title by stopping the Yamaha of Winger, Minn.'s Leslie Benbo.
