Race of Champions titles settled; racers look to Saturday to score big wins and trip to Southern California

COMMERCE, Ga. - In the final results of the NHRA Southeast Division Race of Champions, Jamie Alexander, John Rollins, Franky Bishop, Dennis Stewart and Danny Paul all scored wins in their respective categories.

In the Super Pro final, Mobile Dragway racer, Jamie Alexander of Grand Bay, Ala., earned his second Super Pro Race of Champions win in a row. In the final, Alexander took out Bristol Dragway's Ronnie McGaha of Mt. Carmel, Tenn.

Scoring the victory in Pro, behind the wheel of his '72 Nova, was Micanopy, Fla., racer John Rollins. Rollins, who was racing for South Georgia Motorsports Park, took out the '72 Skylark of Jax Raceways representative, Choc Houston of Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Racing for U.S. 19 Dragway, Franky Bishop of Albany, Ga., took out Gainesville Raceway's Chip Rollins of Gainesville, Fla., to claim the crown in the Sportsman category.

The Motorcycle Race of Champions victory went to Dennis Stewart of St. Petersburg, Fla. In the final, Stewart, racing for Orlando Speed World Dragway, eliminated Bristol Dragway's Mike Gill of Elizabethton, Tenn.

In the High School class, Mobile Dragway racer Danny Paul of Mobile, Ala., took out Music City Raceway's James Rowlett of Mt. Joliet, Tenn.

In addition to the on track action, awards were also given to the drivers voted to have the Best Appearing or Engineered Car or Bike.

Earning the award for the Best Appearing Car, was the truck of W.C. Lankas of Snead Ferry, N.C. Lankas, who is the Southeast Division's defending High School Champion, now fields a S-10 truck in Super Pro. The award for the Best Appearing Bike was given to Roy Nealy Jr., of Franklin, Tenn.

Earning the award for the Best Engineered Car was Boone, N.C., racer Neal Church, while Best Engineered Bike was awarded to defending Division Champion Rickey Cook of Lavergne, Tenn.

The Summit Racing Series Finals are expected to wrap up tomorrow with the crowning of the individual championships in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle. The victors in those categories will qualify to compete for national championship honors at the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Finals, to be held at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals next month at Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif.
