Texas Raceway defends team title
ENNIS, TEXAS - In the final rounds of the NHRA South Central Division Summit Racing Series Finals at Texas Motorplex, champions were crowned in five racing categories. Nearly 700 of the best racers from across the division came to the Motorplex to compete for individual and team honors in Super Pro, Pro, No-E Quick, No-E Street and Motorcycle.
The team from Texas Raceway was successful in repeating as team champions. The Kennedale, Texas, team edged out the home team from the Motorplex and the group from Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. Texas Raceway scored a total of 114 points while the other two teams tied with 111 points apiece.
In the Super Pro category, Larry Thomason of Port Arthur, Texas, drove his '62 Plymouth to the win over Dawson, Texas, racer Belinda Jenkins and her '67 Camaro. Pro class driver, Kim Humphrey of Ft. Worth, Texas, took the win in a '74 Dart over Scott Molder of Bedford, Texas, who campaigned a '67 Camaro. Jeromy Hefler of Kennedale, Texas, earned the win in the No-E Quick class, beating out David Guidry, Napoleonville, La., and his '69 Corvette. The No-E Street champion was Pioneer, La., driver Kevin Hale in his '80 Mustang. Hale beat Dustin Vassar of Kennedale, Texas, in a '70 Duster. In the two-wheel division Gerald Jordon, Kyle, Texas, rode his '92 Suzuki to victory over Houston's Robert Sanders aboard an '04 Kawasaki.
Individual winners in No-E Quick, No-E Street and Motorcycle, as well as the winner of a run-off between the Pro and Super Pro champions will advance to compete for a national championship against winners from NHRA's other six divisions at the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November. Super Pro champion Thompson won the run off and will join Hefler, Hale and Jordan in Pomona. Each participant will receive $3,500 for participating in the Finals and the national champion in each class will earn an additional $5,000.
Texas Raceway made it a sweep for the weekend when The Killer Bees, as they are known, were tabbed for the National Dragster Team Spirit Award.
