Further input on Stock, Super Stock proposals

09/10/2004

As a result of input received from racers regarding the issue of changing Stock and Super Stock class weight breaks to one pound increments, the NHRA is soliciting further input on two of the more popular methods suggested by many racers.

While a large number of racers liked the idea of one pound breaks, the biggest concern by those opposed was the amount of weight that many of the higher horsepower cars would be required to add or subtract. Therefore the NHRA will now consider one of the two following methods based on further review and racer input:

1. Utilize ¾-pound weight breaks in the higher HP categories. Under this proposal the weight breaks affected would change as follows:

StockSuper StockGT
A/S8.00 to 8.74SS/AH6.00GT/A8.00 to 8.75
B/S8.75 to 9.49SS/A6.00 to 6.74GT/B8.75 to 9.49
C/S9.50 to 10.24SS/B6.75 to 7.49GT/C9.50 to 10.24
D/S10.25 to 10.99SS/C7.50 to 8.24GT/D10.25 to 11.99
E/S11.00 to 11.74SS/D 8.25 to 8.99GT/E-G@ 1 pound
F/S11.75 to 12.49SS/E-L@ 1 poundGT/H14.00 or more
G/S12.50 to 13.24SS/M17.00 or more
H/S13.25 to 13.99
I-N@ 1 pound
O/S20.00 or more
P/S22.00 or more

2. Leave weight breaks at half-pound increments and combine stick shift and automatic transmission classes. This method would not require any changes to any current vehicle in competition, as a revised weight scale would do.

"The amount of input from racers on the above issues was significant and it is good to see racers having a voice in what method the NHRA will use in consolidating the class structure in these categories" said Len Imbrogno, Director of Sportsman Racing and member tracks. "There will always be a number of racers who do not welcome any change, but as we look to the future of S/SS racing, a consolidation of the combined 155 classes that currently exist in the Stock and Super Stock categories was eminent."

Racers are urged to give input on the two possible choices to racerinput@nhra.com.
