Four Sportsman championships still up for grabs at Auto Club NHRA Finals

11/09/2004

Following the completion of the Division 7 event at The Strip At Las Vegas Motor Speedway, four Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series championships remain to be decided this weekend at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. In Las Vegas, Dan Fletcher's first-round foul decided the Super Stock title bout in favor of Larry Stewart Jr., allowing him to join Cy Chesterman (Top Alcohol Funny Car) and Dean Carter (Comp) on the 2004 champions roster.

In Alcohol Dragster, Bill Reichert will try to hold off Mitch Myers and Randy Meyer while in Stock, seasonlong points leader Lee Zane will try to maintain his lead over two-class hitter Jeff Hefler. In Super Comp, points leader Doug Doll Jr. will need to fend of Rock Haas and Lyndon Rutland while in Super Gas, current frontman Tom Stalba will try to hold off Jonathan Womack.

Alcohol Dragster

Bill Reichert
Reichert (697 points) is improving on a semifinal finish (53 points) and will win the championship if he wins the final round or if neither Myers nor Meyer improves on their current points.

Myers (691 points) hopes to better a 42-point second-round score and can win the championship if he wins the final, or reaches semifinals or final if Reichert does not advance past the semifinals. If Myers and Reichert meet in the final, it will be winner take all.

Meyer (658 points), who won the championship as a car owner last year with driver Alan Bradshaw, also needs to improve on a second round (42). To take the championship, he must win the event, and hope that Myers does not advance past the second round or Reichert past the semifinals.

Stock
Zane, at 703 markers, is done earning championship points while Hefler, who sits at 660 points will try to improving on a 50-point third-round finish. To win championship, Hefler must reach the final if the event is a seven-round race or win the event if it is a six-round race.

Super Comp
While Doll (608 points) is done earning championship points, Haas (588 points) is trying to improve on a fourth-round (61-point) finish. To pass Doll, Haas must reach the semifinals. To finish ahead of Rutland, Haas must advance one round further than Rutland. If Haas and Rutland race in the final, it will be a winner-take-all affair.

Rutland (586 points) needs to better his third round (50-point) low score. To tie Doll, Rutland must reach the quarterfinals; he'll pass him if he reaches the semifinals. To finish ahead of Haas, Rutland must advance to the equal round as Haas. If both lose in the semifinals, Rutland would be the champion.

If Rutland loses in the quarterfinals and Haas does not reach the semifinals, Rutland and Doll will be tied. The first tie-breaker is head to head competition, but the two have not raced each other this year. The second tie-breaker is rounds won, which prior to the Finals favors Doll, 35-34. If the two end up tied and do not race each other in Pomona, Doll will the championship. If they do race, and Rutland makes it to the quarterfinals, Rutland will be the champion.

Super Gas
Stalba (605) is done earning championship points meaning that Womack (580 points), who is improving on a first-round (30-point) finish, must reach the fourth round to earn 61 points and win the championship with 611 points.
