Stock & Super Stock changes currently under consideration for 2005

08/26/2004

A topic of conversation among Stock and Super Stock racers this season is the possibility of changing the current half-pound weight-break class increments to one-pound weight breaks. Such a change, endorsed by most Stock and Super Stock racers, would increase car counts in each class and allow for more heads-up racing at events where class eliminations are contested.

Said Len Imbrogno, NHRA director of Sportsman racing and member tracks, "In talking with Stock and Super Stock racers at the national and divisional events I have attended this season, there is a great deal of support from racers to change the weight-break structure to one-pound increments along with bringing back more class eliminations at national events. A move to restructure weight breaks to include more cars in each class and bringing back more class eliminations at national events are changes that would have strong support from Stock and Super Stock racers as well as a number of contingency sponsors. Stock and Super Stock are performance-based categories, and class racing is why many of our racers compete in these categories."

In an effort to streamline the Super Stock categories from what currently exists in the NHRA Rulebook, the restructuring proposed by NHRA would also include a move toward combining some of the less-popular categories over the next several years. As an example, with so few Modified Compacts in NHRA competition (Section 6H of the NHRA Rulebook), this category would be eliminated in 2005 and the three classes in which racers are currently competing (of the six classes in Modified Compact) would be moved into Modified Stock (Section 6D).

Other changes currently under consideration for the 2005 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season:

  • Creating one specific 6.00-pound weight-break class in Super Stock, designated SS/AH, for the Hemi Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas currently running in SS/AA and SS/A. Reasoning: The ever-popular SS/AA Hemi Shootout events have created a growing popularity with racers and fans for these legendary cars, supported by the increasing number of cars that have been built specifically for the Hemi Shootout events and this class.
  • The inclusion of a 13.00-pound class in the Front Wheel Drive Stock category. Reasoning: With the increasing number of FWD performance cars being produced by the OEM comes an increasing amount of interest from Stock racers who want to compete with FWD cars, such as the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, the Bonneville SSEI and GXP, the new Dodge Neon SRT/4, and other high-horsepower FWD cars that would fit into such a weight break.
  • Allowing all cars to move up or down one class.

Looking toward 2006, consideration is also being given to incorporating Modified Truck into the Modified Stock category and GT/Truck into the SS/GT category.

Stock and Super Stock racers are asked to review the proposed changes and provide input to the NHRA tech department by sending comments to racerinput@nhra.com.
