Final Eliminations:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Some surprises at Nebraska Motorplex
SCRIBNER, Neb. - For those who like to root for the front runners, the fourth of six NHRA West Central Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events went into the books with mixed reviews. The current division points leader went down in Top Alcohol Dragster but scored big in Top Alcohol Funny Car. And an out-of division car upset the apple cart in Competition Eliminator.
David Wells, of LeMars, Iowa, took the TAD victory in a tire-shaking final-round battle against Larry Traugott, of Woodward, Okla., in the final. It was a surprising final because of who was not in it. Wells and Traugott came into the Nebraska Motorplex event with enough points to be ranked second and third on the West Central Division list. But Randy Meyer, the Spring Hill, Kan., based division leader was headed off in the semi-finals by Traugott. Meyer was a bit late getting off the starting line in that semi-final round match and then his engine started misfiring near the end of the course. It was all Traugott needed for the upset. Meyer, who came in with a commanding lead, will no doubt remain on top of the points list.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car things went closer to form. Chesterman, the current points leader from Sioux City, Iowa, grabbed his fourth win of the season and solidified his tightened his stranglehold on the 2004 West Central Division title. But No. 2 points man Kirk Williams, also out of Iowa, made Chesterman work for it in the final. In fact, both cars ran 5.87-seconds with Williams a mere .002 seconds away in performance. Chesterman, however, was nearly perfect with his reaction time at the start and made Williams chase him all the way to the finish line.
In Comp Eliminator David Rampy, an out-of-division invader from Alabama, took the winners points home with him, so runner-up Scott Benham of Texas, will actually gain ground despite the final-round loss. Benham came in to the Scribner event 32 points behind Clint Sallee and the runner-up points should lift Benham into the points lead.
Ron Taylor, of Lincoln, scored for the home-state contingent in Super Stock Eliminator over Minnesotan Terry Johnson, while Tim Mosbek of Minnesota beat Rampy in the Stock final, as the versatile Alabama driver tried for a rare Comp/Stock double.
NHRA West Central Division racers will now move on to Heartland Park Topeka for their next, the fifth of six, leg of the 2004 Lucas Oil Drag Series. Action there will take place Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27 and 28.

Saturday Qualifying:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
West Central Division leaders top qualifying
SCRIBNER, Neb. - After three exciting rounds of qualifying on Saturday, Sunday's Fields are set for the Budweiser Summer Sizzle event at Nebraska Motorplex. Almost as written in a script, the top two points earners for the NHRA West Central Division in both Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualified one-two their respective categories.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Cy Chesterman, who has a big lead in the division but would like to improve on his fourth place standing in the national points, is the top qualifier. He is followed by Kirk Williams and Vern Moats, who hold down the No.s 3 and 4 spots in the division.

Event preview:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chesterman leads the way into NHRA West Central Division's second half
SCRIBNER, Neb. - Nebraska Motorplex will host the Budweiser Summer Sizzle, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Aug. 6-8. The event is the fourth of six in NHRA West Central Division competition. Drivers in eight categories, including 260 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, are competing for points leading to divisional and national championships. The division's Kerker Motorcycle Series, will also run in conjunction with the event. The Saturday night Bud Light Night of Flames will also feature a Jet Car exhibition.
So far, there have been no repeat winners in Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD), but Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC) driver Cy Chesterman is undefeated so far this year winning the first three events in the division in Great Bend, Kan., Brainerd, Minn., and Denver.
Needless to say, Chesterman, a resident of Sioux City, Iowa, leads the West Central Division Lucas Series points standings. He is trying to back up his 2003 Championship. Kirk Williams, the 2002 Division Champion, out of Glenwood, Iowa, is hoping to shave down some of Chesterman's points lead. Williams was runner-up to Chesterman in Brainerd, Minn., and currently is No. 2 in points for the division. A collateral result of Chesterman's great run in the division is that he is currently No. 2 in the Lucas Oil Series national points standings, behind Southeast Division racer Jay Payne of Claremont, Calif. That only adds to Chesterman's incentive to take top honors at the Nebraska Motorplex.
In Top Alcohol Dragster, Randy Meyer of Spring Hill, Kan., is back in the saddle after a two-season hiatus. He is the current division points leader and stands No. 3 nationally. This on the strength of his national event win in Englishtown, N.J., an out-of division victory in Memphis, Tenn., and his West Central Division win at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip in Great Bend, Kan.
Defending West Central Division Champion David Wells, of Lemars, Iowa, is currently second on the points list. In June, Wells captured a win at Brainerd Int'l Raceway, his lone victory of the year.
Gates at Nebraska Motorplex open at 8 a.m. on Friday and at 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Qualifying and time trials start at 9 a.m. Friday and continue Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will make qualifying runs Saturday at noon, 4 and 8 p.m. The special Jet Car show is also planned at 6:15, 8:30 and 10 p.m.
Tickets, including a pit pass, for the Budweiser Summer Sizzle in Scribner are $20 each day. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
Nebraska Motorplex is located on Raceway Road, just south of Scribner off Highway 275. For more information call the track, (402) 466-1759, or visit www.nemotorplex.com.
Sunday's final rounds of eliminations begin at 8 a.m. Top Alcohol and Funny Car first round is scheduled for noon.
After the stop in Scribner, the West Central Division Lucas Oil Series will move on to Heartland Park Topeka, in Kansas, Aug. 27-29, for its fifth stop of the six-race season.
