Event preview:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Division 1 gears up 2004 Lucas Oil season
READING, Pa. - NHRA Northeast division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will head to Maple Grove Raceway to open the 2004 season May 28-30. Racers in eight categories, including 250-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters (TAD) and Top Alcohol Funny Cars (TAFC), will run for points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a share of the more than $560,000 champions' purse.
This race will be the first for many of the division's top competitors in Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC) and Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD).
Defending division TAFC champ Frank Manzo will begin his quest for a 10th straight division title as well as his eighth consecutive national crown. Manzo's only race so far this year has been at the NHRA national event in Gainesville, Fla., where he went to the semifinals. In 2003 division competition the Morganville, N.J., racer won five of the seven races, including here at Maple Grove Raceway, and he was the No. 1 qualifier at four of them.
This year, Manzo's closest rival will likely be Bob Newberry, another veteran racer. Last year, Newberry, a resident of Schenectady, N.Y., made four successive runner-up showings in the division. It was enough to place him second in the division point standings. Overall, he was fourth in the national point standings.
In the TAD class, it is unclear whether defending division champ Fran Monaghan will be in competition. The car he drove in 2003 is set to be piloted by reigning TAD national champion Alan Bradshaw. Last year Bradshaw claimed the NHRA West Central division as his home and this year he'll be driving for a new team out of the Northeast division. In 2003, Bradshaw, an Odessa, Texas, resident, had two wins and a runner-up finish on the divisional level and scored four NHRA national event wins.
Arthur Gallant, the 2002 TAD national champion and Northeast division champion, is back in competition this year. The Boxboro, Mass., racer appeared at a limited number of events last year but this season it looks like he may be back to a full schedule. He already has an NHRA national event win under his belt.
Friday's activities will be devoted to completing the track's rain-delayed Spring National Open. Racers in all National Open categories will have one time trial or qualifying pass and then run all rounds of eliminations. TAD and TAFC racers in the Lucas Oil event will have one qualifying run at 6 p.m. Friday. Gates at Maple Grove Raceway will open at 7:30 a.m. and racing will start at 8 a.m.
Gates will open Saturday at 8 a.m. and qualifying and time trials for all Lucas Oil categories will begin at 8:30 a.m. TAD and TAFC will have a qualifying run at 1:30 p.m. All classes will run first round of eliminations starting at 3:30 p.m. and TAD and TAFC will run all rounds of eliminations with first round starting at 5 p.m.
Sunday, gates open at 8 a.m. and eliminations for all remaining classes continue at 9 a.m.
General admission is $20 each day. For more information call Maple Grove Raceway, (610) 856-7200 or visit www.MapleGroveRaceway.com.
NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series drivers will head to Lebanon Valley Dragway in West Lebanon, N.Y., July 2-4 for the next Northeast division race.
