NHRA policy announcement concerning proper safety equipment usage
2/16/2004
Many drivers, from the Professional level to Sportsman categories, have been witnessed removing safety equipment while still on the racing surface, forcing the NHRA Technical department to clarify the proper use of safety equipment. According to NHRA's Policy & Procedures, drivers are required to maintain the proper use of safety equipment until the vehicle exits the racing surface to avoid putting themselves and others at risk.
This safety equipment usage policy was issued during the 2003 racing season and the situation on the racetrack only got worse as the season progressed. As a reminder, the loosening and removal of seat belts, helmets, gloves, window nets, lifting of helmet shield, and removal of all other safety equipment is not permitted until the vehicle leaves the racing surface. This rule also applies to racers, at all levels of the sport, leaving the starting line with helmet shields open.
The NHRA Technical and Competition Department has implemented a program for the 2004 season to check for such infractions. If a racer is viewed with safety equipment being used improperly, the first offense will be a written warning. Subsequent infractions can and will lead to possible monetary fines and suspension.
