Nitromethane safety and security training starts at the Winternationals
2/14/2004
Wednesday, February 18, 2004
Hospitality Village, Pomona Raceway
Start time: 2:00
The NHRA accepted suppliers of nitromethane, DOW/Angus and Wego, will present a nitromethane safety and security training program at the date and time noted above. The program is free of charge.
This educational seminar is designed for all Professional and Sportsman racing operations that handle, mix, use or transport nitromethane. The two-hour seminar will focus on proper handling, storage and other information pertaining to the use of nitromethane.
Below is the rule amendment regarding nitromethane.
AMENDMENT TO 2004 NHRA RULEBOOK - FEBRUARY 13, 2004
SECTION 16 - GENERAL REGULATIONS - 1:8-A NITROMETHANE
Only nitromethane from an NHRA accepted supplier may be brought on site or used on site at any NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event ("NHRA National Event") or NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event ("NHRA Divisional Event"). NHRA will designate accepted suppliers of nitromethane that may be brought on site and/or used on site at NHRA National Events and NHRA Divisional Events. To be eligible for competition, fuel teams must use nitromethane from one of the accepted suppliers. All nitromethane will continue to be required to contain a marker that changes color when the nitromethane has been sensitized or contaminated; no clear nitromethane will be allowed. Fuel, whether in the vehicle or otherwise, as well as transporters and pit areas, will be checked for compliance with this rule as deemed appropriate by NHRA. Any participant who violates any rule regarding nitromethane shall be banned from competition at the applicable event, or shall be subject to such other penalty deemed appropriate by NHRA.
NHRA's decision to designate accepted suppliers is based on factors including NHRA's judgment that security, safety, long term availability of both a domestically produced and imported supply of nitromethane, and the best interests of the sport of drag racing are best served thereby. As of February 12, 2004, the accepted suppliers are DOW/Angus and Wego. Beginning at the 2004 K & N Filters Winternationals, the accepted suppliers of nitromethane are offering a nitromethane safety and security training program, free of charge, to all teams who use nitromethane. The accepted suppliers will, beginning at a time to be determined by the suppliers, require their on site vendor(s) to sell nitromethane only to individuals who have completed the safety and security training and who show valid photo identification.
