Top qualifier Hines seeks first K&N Filters Pro Bike Klash victory
8/27/2004
Andrew Hines
|
Andrew Hines will headline a special eight-bike field from the No. 1 qualifying position as he seeks his first victory in the 14th annual K&N Filters Pro Bike Klash at Indianapolis Raceway Park on Sept. 4. The special bonus event for NHRA Pro Stock Bike competitors will be held during the 50th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the world's most prestigious drag race.
The total race day purse for the K&N Filters Pro Bike Klash at Indianapolis Raceway Park is $36,000. The winner will earn a $15,000 bonus from K&N Filters. Any rider who can win the Klash and the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals on Sept. 6 will earn a $10,000 "Double-Up" bonus from the NHRA.
The Klash runner-up will earn $5,000. The two semifinalists will earn $3,000 each, while the four first-round finishers will earn $2,500 apiece.
Hines claimed the No. 1 spot for the special event for the first time in his career by earning seven No. 1 qualifying efforts and qualifying fifth or better at 14 of the 16 NHRA events that comprised the Klash series during the last year. Pro Stock Bike riders receive $52,000 during the Klash series. In addition to the $36,000 available in the Klash, $16,000 in bonuses were awarded to quick qualifiers throughout the 16-race Klash series.
Double-amputee Reggie Showers, rider of the PDI Suzuki, won his first K&N Filters Pro Bike Klash in 2003. Showers, from Philadelphia, held off Geno Scali in the final round.
Three-time NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Bike champion Angelle Savoie, who has been a runner-up in the Klash in three consecutive seasons (1998-2000), starts from the No. 2 position and is followed by defending POWERade series champion Scali and Craig Treble, winner of the event in 2002.
K&N Filters Pro Bike Klash rounds are scheduled for 1, 2:50 and 6:10 p.m. on Sept. 4.
