Ormsby Jr. completes license upgrade to Top Fuel

By Rob Geiger, NHRA.com
9/13/2004

"Top Fuel racing is really bitchin'."
– Gary Ormsby Jr.

Second-generation drag racer Gary Ormsby Jr., the son of 1989 Top Fuel champion Gary Ormsby Sr., completed his Top Fuel licensing requirements over the weekend at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Under the watchful guidance of co-crew chiefs Jimmy Walsh and Dean Westmoreland, Ormsby Jr. executed a 4.94-second pass at 302 mph and a 5.01 at 286 mph to upgrade his license from a Top Alcohol Dragster to a Top Fuel dragster. The group also pulled off a 5.28 at 246 mph.

"I'm absolutely buzzing," said Ormsby Jr., as Steve Chrisman and Bob Hallock signed off on his license. "Top Fuel racing is really bitchin'. I'm ready to sell everything I have to go racing. It's an unreal rush.

"The 4.94 run was the best, obviously, but it was the one where everything stayed together. On the other two passes we tossed the belt way down track so the car kind of nosed over. But it was still three great rides and we're excited about getting on track in Texas."

Originally, Ormsby Jr. and car owner Dexter Tuttle had hoped to debut their Menards/ColorFast Top Fuel dragster at the 50th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis but they couldn't get the car down a hot Las Vegas Strip in enough time to make the trip. They now plan to christen the Brad Hadman chassis at the 19th annual O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec in Dallas. The group will also race in Chicago and Pomona, Calif.

"The three races we're going to are all Menards areas," Ormsby said. "And we're trying to generate some interest to add Las Vegas as well. After this weekend, I want to race as much as humanly possible. I can't get enough.

"I really want to take a moment to thank everyone who has helped my dream come true, especially Jeg's Mail Order and Fram-Autolite, who have been with me from the start. Plus, all the guys on this team. We're new and we're just getting started but we're having fun."
