'Gus' Leighton, original Dust Devil and Inyokern manager, passes away

11/24/2004

Robert "Gus" Leighton, one of the original members of the Dust Devils Auto Club that operate California's Inyokern Drag Strip, passed away Nov. 23 after a short illness. He was 76.

In the 1950s and '60s, Leighton teamed with former NHRA Division 7 Director and Vice President of Field Operations Bernie Partridge on a modified roadster, and later with Dennis Garrett on a Dragmaster B/Dragster that carried the team to a Hot Rod Magazine Top 10 finish nationwide in 1960.

Leighton continued a race operation with his son, David, with stints in Comp Eliminator, Super Comp and ET racing. Recently Leighton's grandchildren, Jared and Katie Leighton, have been wheeling the Desert Express dragsters.

Leighton also served as a national event worker through the 1970s and as the track manager at Inyokern throughout its 50th season this year, and was looking forward the s opening of the track'51st season next week.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Leighton's name to Racers for Christ, P.O. Box 1208, Gilbert, AZ 85299-1208.
