NHRA Pit Notes:
Despite mishap, sore Hines continues title quest; Gann disqualified

11/13/2004

Andrew Hines

The Screamin' Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson team is hustling to get the bike ready for the fourth round of qualifying. During the first qualifying attempt Saturday, the bike chain broke at the 300-foot mark, ripping through the body of the bike, causing minor injuries to Andrew Hines. The 21-year-old said he had some bruising and a sore ankle. Hines was checked and released by NHRA emergency services.

Hines, currently qualified in the 14th spot, could clinch his first championship today if he remains qualified for the 16-bike field.

The team is scrambling to put the bike back together, as the body and the wheelie bar were damaged. For the first time, the Vance & Hines team have a show bike on the race property. The show bike, the 2002 bike used by teammate GT Tonglet, has been touring the country for two years and is making its first appearance at an NHRA national event.

"The bike broke at the 300-foot mark, but didn't start tearing up the body until just before the finish line," Hines said. "For the first time ever we have a show bike and what's even more amazing, the pieces are actually fitting between my bike and the show bike parts that we need.

"I'm a little shaken up and more sore than anything else. I just really hope we can get the bike back together and make a good pass."

If Hines fails to qualify for the event, second-place rider Antron Brown would need to win tomorrow's final elimination and set a national E.T. record (worth 20 points) in order to claim the POWERade world title.

Gann disqualified: Shawn Gann was disqualified from the event for a fuel violation. Gann was fourth in the POWERade Pro Stock Bike points coming into the event. Per NHRA rules, Gann will not receive any points for the event because the violation was deemed flagrant by NHRA tech officials.
