Schumacher set to thrill Bristol NASCAR crowd

3/24/2004

"There are a lot of NHRA fans over on that side of the fence."
– Tony Schumacher

U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony Schumacher will provide the spectators attending this weekend's Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway a little taste of what NHRA drag racing is all about.

Schumacher, who currently leads the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Top Fuel standings, will fire up his U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster just prior to Sunday's Nextel Cup Series race in Bristol's famed "Thunder Valley."

"I'm looking forward to going down there," said the Chicago native, who recorded his second victory of the season last weekend at the Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. "Hopefully, we can use our little demonstration to draw more fans to our race in Bristol next month."

The NHRA makes its annual trip to Bristol Dragway, April 30-May 2, for the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.

"I've been to a few NASCAR events and I enjoy the racing," Schumacher said. "I went to the Chicago race last year and got a chance to meet some of my U.S. Army NASCAR teammates. They welcomed me with open arms, which I appreciated. I found out that there are a lot of NHRA fans over on that side of the fence."

The U.S. Army also sponsors the No. 01 MB2 Motorsports Chevrolet driven by Joe Nemechek.

"As most people know, I'm pretty close to [injured U.S. Army driver] Jerry Nadeau, so there's a natural connection to the team," Schumacher said. "I hope they root for me as [much] I do for them every weekend."
