Former U.S. Nationals winner Capp to race in Seattle

Following an amazing return performance at the recent race in Edmonton, Alberta, legendary Canadian driver Terry Capp is poised for a NHRA POWERade circuit comeback at the Carquest Auto Parts Nationals in Seattle.

The Canadian drag racing icon has confirmed he will race at Seattle behind the wheel of the newest rendition of the "Royal Canadian" dragster, which he and Team Manager Ron Hodgson will field. The development will happen in conjunction with an impressive supporting role of no less then 31 associate sponsors and in a leased dragster from U.S.-based racer Bob Vandergriff Jr.

The team will utilize Vandergriff's crew, including Canadian-born Rob Flynn, who will oversee tuning duties.

At the Edmonton event, Capp qualified sixth for the eight-car field and went to the final round only to foul out against Clay Millican. During Round 1, Capp carded a 4.751 at 319.37 mph, which were not only the quickest and fastest runs of his career, but were also all-time performance marks for a Canadian in drag racing. Capp's previous career best run had been a 5.02 at 297 mph.

"This car is definitely different to what I have driven before," said Capp, whose biggest career win came during the 1980 U.S. Nationals. "It's a way more sophisticated car but it's also simpler to drive.

"This comeback has been in the planning stages for about one year. It was only through an assembly of our friends and supporters that this would be possible. We wouldn't be doing this without them."
Ron Hodgson, left, a major shareholder for the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, was a driving force behind the reformation of Royal Canadian Motorsports

Capp did reveal that he is optimistic things can develop even further for the team after the Carquest Auto Parts Nationals. "Racing at Seattle is for sure and after that we will weigh the facts," Capp said. "We would also like to compete at Indy. I will be there as a guest for the 50th anniversary, so we would like nothing better then to race at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals too."

An even longer-term association including a possible two-car team equation with Vandergriff Motorsports for 2005 is also under discussion.
