Fans to pick top 20 Mac Tools U.S. Nat'ls moments

7/7/2004

The top 20 memorable moments from the 49-year history of the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals were unveiled in chronological order by NHRA officials during a special press conference Wednesday at 30 South Meridian in downtown Indianapolis.

Officials further announced that NHRA fans will decide the final order of the top 20 memorable moments through a special voting process on NHRA.com. Fans can vote for their favorite memorable moments starting at noon (ET) July 12. The fan vote will close at 8 p.m. (ET) July 25.

Following the fan vote, each moment will be unveiled in order of popularity as selected by NHRA fans on NHRA.com and through the pages of National DRAGSTER starting in early August and leading up to the 50th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Sept. 1-6 at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The top five moments will be revealed on Monday, Sept. 6, during a special ceremony prior to the start of final eliminations for the world's most prestigious drag race.

Some of the notable Mac Tools U.S. Nationals memorable moments included the victory by Calvin Rice in the first U.S. Nationals in 1955; the first race to feature the Christmas Tree in 1961; the site of the first national drag race to feature Funny Car as an eliminator in 1967; Gary Beck's surprising rookie Top Fuel performance in 1972; Shirley Muldowney's triumphant victory in 1982; Don "The Snake" Prudhomme's amazing Funny Car performance in 1982; Bob Glidden's domination of the event throughout the 1980s, which included 13 consecutive final-round appearances; and several moments featuring legendary "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, who won the event a record eight times during his storied career.
