Ormsby Jr. ready to follow in father's footsteps

By Rob Geiger, NHRA.com
8/13/2004

"I'm a survivor. I just stuck with my dream until it came true."
– Gary Ormsby Jr.

Gary Ormsby Jr., the son of 1989 Top Fuel NHRA champion Gary Ormsby, will fulfill a lifelong goal when he takes the seat of the Menards/ColorFast Top Fuel dragster at the 50th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.

Ormsby Jr. will pilot a brand-new Brad Hadman chassis for team owner Dexter Tuttle, who has competed in drag boats and the Busch Series in the past. The group plans to run five of the last six races on the POWERade schedule, skipping Reading, Pa., due to travel constraints.

"When I sold dad's dealership in 1996 I sat down and wrote out a plan of how I wanted my racing career to go," Ormsby Jr. said. "I wanted to spend three years in Super Comp, three years in a Top Alcohol Dragster, and then move to Top Fuel. Obviously if you add that up you'll see I'm a few years behind schedule but we're finally here and I'm so excited to race I can't even describe it. Truthfully, it's almost too good to be true.

"I'm a survivor. I just stuck with my dream until it came true. I was a crew guy, a truck driver, a clean-up guy, whatever it took to stay out here and keep my face in front of people."

Ormsby Jr. has yet to license in a Top Fuel car but the team hopes to finish that process and test next weekend in Las Vegas, the closest track to Tuttle's Banning, Calif.-based race shop. Former John Force Racing crewman Dean Westmoreland will serve as crew chief with Richard Hogan serving as a consultant.

"We hope to create enough awareness for Menards and ColorFast Industries to turn this into a full-time deal," said Ormsby Jr., 37, a three-time national event winner in the Top Alcohol Dragster class. "Dexter owns ColorFast and Menards sells his products at their home improvement stores. That's the connection. Hopefully, we can show them the power of marketing with the NHRA.
