Don Schumacher Racing has announced the addition of a third Funny Car that will hit the track in time for the 50th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.
While not disclosing the driver until the other applicants for the job are informed of his decision, Schumacher told NHRA.com the car will be unveiled during testing for the "Big Go," which is scheduled to run August 24-25 at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
"This will be a true research and development car that we plan to run at all the national events," Schumacher said. "There are lots of components our crew chiefs would like to test and develop for next year and they'll be able to use this car for that purpose. We even have an experimental chassis we're going to try out.
"I have selected the driver and it's someone everyone is very familiar with. I'll wait to disclose who it is until I speak with the other drivers I was considering for the job. I want them to hear it from me first before they read it in the media."
Schumacher currently fields the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster driven by his son Tony Schumacher, the Oakley Hemi Dodge Stratus R/T Funny Car driven by Gary Scelzi, the Matco Tools Dodge Stratus R/T Funny Car driven by Whit Bazemore, the Team Mopar Dodge Stratus R/T Pro Stocker driven by Larry Morgan, and a pair of U.S. Army-sponsored Pro Stock Bikes ridden by Angelle Savoie and Antron Brown.
"I'm not trying to take over drag racing," Schumacher said with a laugh. "I am presented with a lot of different opportunities and I take the ones that make sense for this team. If I don't take these deals, one of our rivals will."
According to Schumacher, a full press release outlining this developing story will be released from the Schumacher Racing camp later today.
