Scali gears up for 'Big Go

Indianapolis, pre-race: Defending NHRA POWERade champion Geno Scali is pulling out all the stops for the biggest and most prestigious drag race of the year, this weekend's NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.

"If I could only win one event a year, this would be the one," said Scali, who coincidentally will vie for his first win of the season. "We've pulled from all of our resources to prepare ourselves for this race. We have strong motors that ran very well in testing. I'm more ready and focused than ever."

Along with trying to add a U.S. Nationals victory to his resume, Scali will also compete in the elite K&N Filters Pro Bike Dash on Saturday. The winner of this race will earn $15,000 and will be eligible for a $10,000 double-up bonus for winning the U.S. Nationals on Monday.

"I think that we have a very realistic chance of winning," Scali said. "The key is to not look too far ahead and just take it one run at a time. There's a lot more riding on this race than the others, but my job is to approach each race the same way."

Scali is coming off a solid outing in Memphis two weeks ago, where he earned his best qualifying spot since the Pontiac Excitement Nationals back in June.

"The new motor really started to come around last race," Scali said. "The bike showed a lot of promise. We have every reason to believe that will continue this weekend."
