Millican maintains sixth spot

Indianapolis, Saturday: After three Top Fuel qualifying sessions, Clay Millican of Team 104+ Performance Additives has piloted his team's special Elvis-themed dragster to the number six qualifying spot at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, with two more qualifying sessions scheduled to take place Sunday.

"Racing in Indy is the ultimate experience," said Millican. "This race has so much history and I am honored to be racing here among the very best, especially with Elvis on our car. He loved fast cars and we are both from the Memphis area, so it has been a lot of fun to have a legend like him on our car."

Millican's best qualifying pass thus far came on Friday night when he blasted down the quarter mile drag strip with an elapsed time of 4.623 at 303.16 mph. Millican is currently 14th in the 2004 NHRA Top Fuel points standings after racing in just seven of the 17 national events that have taken place this season. The U.S. Nationals mark Millican's eighth NHRA race in 2004, and he plans to race in two to three more NHRA national events this season.

Earlier this season, Millican and Team 104+ Performance Additives advanced to three straight NHRA final rounds at the national events in Houston, Bristol, and Atlanta. They hope to get their first-ever NHRA Top Fuel victory at the U.S. Nationals this weekend.

Millican set to race at U.S. Nationals

Indianapolis, pre-race: Clay Millican of Team 104+ Performance Additives/Lehman Racing will race the team's special Elvis-themed dragster at the 50th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.

"I think after the way the car has run in the past few races, we are prepared for a good race in Indy," said Millican. "This is the biggest race of the year and I think it would be a really good place for us to get our first NHRA win."

This marks Millican's second year to race at the U.S. Nationals. In 2003 he qualified in the number 15 position, but was unable to compete in eliminations due to a scheduling conflict that occurred when the race was postponed due to weather.

Millican currently holds the number 14 spot in the NHRA Top Fuel points standings, an impressive feat considering he has raced in just seven of the 17 national events that have taken place thus far in 2004. He has advanced to three final rounds this season at the national events in Houston, Bristol, and Atlanta, and has a round winning percentage of 63.2-percent for the season.

In his last race, the NHRA O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals, Millican debuted the team's Elvis-themed car at his hometown track, the Memphis Motorsports Park, and advanced to the semi-final round, where he lost to Scott Kalitta. Millican unveiled the Elvis-themed car two weeks earlier by performing a burnout down Elvis Presley Boulevard outside of the front gates of Elvis's Graceland mansion during Elvis Week.
