SuperNationals will be an affair of the heart for a hometown favorite
Englishtown, pre-race: This weekend as N.J. native Terry Haddock races his Barrett Enterprises Camaro Funny Car in the 35th annual K&N Filters Supernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, he will add a special page to his book of memories.
"I'm at home here at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park," said Haddock. "I live about 50 miles from here and I've been racing here since I was 17. I have so many great memories from this place. I raced a Fuel Altered with the 'Hot Rods from Hell' group and I made my final fuel license pass at this track. But the best part of racing at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park is that my Mom and Dad and my friends and family are able to come to this race. It's great to share my passion with all the people who have supported me over the years."
This year sharing Father's Day with his Dad at the races on Sunday has very special meaning for Haddock. Less than a month ago, Haddock's Dad, Ken suffered a heart attack while driving alone to Maine. He ended up in a hospital in Connecticut and under went quadruple bypass surgery.
"My Dad gave us quite a scare," said Haddock. "We didn't realize he was so ill. I hadn't been close with my family in the past, but the last few years we've been spending a lot more time together. But I never got to tell my dad that I loved him. When he got sick, I was in Chicago with my sponsors, Bill and Patti Barrett preparing for the Chicago race and I didn't think I was going to be able to see Dad before he had his surgery. I had this fear that we would lose him and I wouldn't have a chance to tell him how I felt. But the Barrett's made it possible for me to go home and be with him during his surgery, even though he kept yelling at me to go back and be with the race car.
"I'm also looking forward to this weekend because the Barrett's will finally get to meet my family. I also want them to meet one of my other sponsors, Jean Ann of Speed Logistics."
Jean Ann Campagna owns Speed Logistics, LLC of Little Falls, N.J. Speed Logistics is a purchasing agent for the U.S. Government. Campagna, a racer in her own right will be racing her Super Comp Dragster this weekend and hopes to repeat her 2001 performance, when she won this event.
"When you have special people in your life," Haddock said, "you want them to know each other and all be together and share great times together. And for me having everyone that is special in my life here with me at the race track where it all started, makes my dream even sweeter and something I will treasure forever. And it's cool to be here in Englishtown because my Dad has never seen me run 300 mph in person; he's only seen it on television. So it will be great to have him here at the track and maybe we can run 300 for him for Father's Day."
