Results for Qualifying Round 1
BRISTOL, Tenn. - BRISTOL - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by Quaker State listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Bryan Seward Runs 8.679/172.12, Now #2
Right Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 7.023/197.42, Now #1
5:00 p.m. Current weather conditions: 71 degrees, 58 percent relative humidity, the barometer 28.61 inches, adjusted altitude 2,547 feet, with a track temperature of 86 degrees.

First time out for Seward and Humphrey. Seward's car was very slow off the starting line and never got up to speed. Humphrey's car was much quicker early, but was loose about 200 feet out.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.924/198.26, Now #1
Right Lane: Eric Shelton Runs 7.016/195.90, Now #2
Left Lane: Dester Cambron No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Jim Cunningham Runs 8.714/112.56, Now #5
Cambron was too slow staging and the autostart system timed him out. Cunningham was out of the throttle very early in his run.
Left Lane: Fernando Cuadra Runs 6.915/198.73, Now #1
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.965/194.91, Now #3
Cuadra continues to make nice-looking runs - remember, this track is one of the higher altitude tracks on the tour and the track record is 6.853 seconds.
Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.878/199.82, Now #1
Right Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.887/199.55, Now #2
Troy is the track record-holder and made a nice opening pass. Grant's run was almost as good, but "the big guns" are yet to run.
Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.914/199.35, Now #4
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.898/200.11, Now #3
Krisher runs our first 200 mph speed of the weekend, but Gaines' 1.026 60-foot time and Krisher's 1.034 were slow compared with Grant's 1.006.
Left Lane: Steve Johns Runs 15.504/77.29, Now #12
Right Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 26.291/25.12, Now #13
Massive tire shake by both cars. Whisnant's car lost fire and coasted through before he managed to get it fired again.
Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.877/198.99, Now #1
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.921/200.11, Now #7
Pawuk made a nice opening run, but gave up a lot of elapsed time in the first half of the run.
Left Lane: JR Carr Runs 6.928/199.05, Now #10
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.884/200.56, Now #3
Alderman's car did a bit of a dance on the launch, then he drove away from Carr.
Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.859/200.08, Now #1
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.873/199.61, Now #2
Johnson tests here, so he should have an advantage. He does, with a 1.009 60-foot time, but Yates was not far behind, his short time 1.010. Two nice runs, side-by-side.
Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.898/199.17, Now #8
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.944/199.91, Now #14
60-foot times of 1.031 for Edwards and 1.029 for Smith signaled slightly off-pace runs for this pair.
Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.841/200.05, Now #1
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.911/199.67, Now #10
Allen reset the track elapsed time record on a smooth, straight pass, starting with a 1.005 60-foot time.
Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.840/201.10, Now #1
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.860/201.58, Now #4
The first of the Ken Black cars reset the fresh track elapsed time record with a rather pedestrian 1.022 60-foot time. WJ spun the tires hard on the launch, but matched Ron Krisher's track speed record.
Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.851/200.71, Now #3
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.853/201.19, Now #4
Jeg tied his brother's retired track elapsed time record and Morgan bettered it.
Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 7.001/200.44, Now #23
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.790/202.52, Now #1
Last pair...and Anderson just hammered both ends of the track record, once again demonstrating the dominating performance edge he has shown all season. Throughout this session, several drivers flirted with or nibbled at the track records, but Anderson took both to new levels. KJ spun the tires on the launch, posting an off-pace 1.089 60-foot time, and he trailed badly before the 330-foot marker.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
BRISTOL, Tenn. - BRISTOL - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by Quaker State listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 14.419/57.19, Now #29
Best prior run: 26.291/25.12, Was #29
Right Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 7.045/194.04, Now #26
                                  No Prior Run
7:47 p.m. Current weather conditions: 69 degrees, 60 percent relative humidity, the barometer 28.59 inches, adjusted altitude 2,523 feet, with a track temperature of 76 degrees.

The second session opens with V. Gaines on the bubble at 6.914 seconds. Cambron failed to stage promptly in the first session and was timed out. Whisnant Shook very hard this afternoon and had to give it up. Whisnant's second try was almost a duplicate of the first. Cambron got off the line cleanly, but lost a lot of time in the middle of the run.

Left Lane: Jim Cunningham Runs 22.143/25.66, Now #29
Best prior run: 8.714/112.56, Was #28
Right Lane: Steve Johns Runs 6.875/198.29, Now #9
Best prior run: 15.504/77.29, Was #30
Cunningham shook hard, something shiny coming out from under the car. Johns made a good, clean run and the time may hold up through the rest of the round, but his speed was low enough to indicate he got just about all he could on that run.
Left Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 7.042/195.93, Now #26
Best prior run: 7.023/197.42, Was #26
Right Lane: Bryan Seward Runs 13.795/60.82, Now #28
Best prior run: 8.679/172.12, Was #28
"The new guys" were paired once again. Seward's car shook and danced until he lifted. Humphrey lost a lot of time early in his run.
Left Lane: Eric Shelton Runs 6.982/195.99, Now #25
Best prior run: 7.016/195.90, Was #25
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.841/201.13, Now #3
Best prior run: 7.001/200.44, Was #24
Shelton is driving a brand-new Stratus, a big step up from last-year's Neon. He left hard, but KJ started pulling away almost immediately, making the run everyone expected from him in the first session.
Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.961/196.44, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.965/194.91, Was #24
Right Lane: JR Carr Runs 22.570/30.64, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.928/199.05, Was #22
The bump is down to Mike Edwards' 6.898, by the way, and should go even lower in the rest of the session. Bit not this pair, carr getting way out of shape with tire shake and Watson running out of steam in the middle of the run.
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.881/199.11, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.944/199.91, Was #23
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.966/197.28, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.924/198.26, Was #21
They pushed these two back briefly while the Safety Safari removed Carr's auto from the shutdown area. Then Smith bumped in, making the bump Ron Krisher's 6.898.
Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.884/199.23, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.921/200.11, Was #21
Right Lane: Fernando Cuadra Runs 6.894/199.11, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.915/198.73, Was #20
Cuadra ran quicker than the bump, but Koretsky gave him a moving target and Cuadra missed. That put Barry grant on the bubble at 6.997.
Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.874/199.46, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.911/199.67, Was #20
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.903/199.05, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.914/199.35, Was #21
Another bump, Connolly moving the target to Koretsky's back at 6.884.
Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.851/199.20, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.898/200.11, Was #19
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.937/199.05, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.898/199.17, Was #20
Both drivers were in the field a few minutes ago and Krisher got back in easily, but Edwards spun the tires and fishtailed a couple times on the launch. That moved the bump once again, to Darrell Alderman's 6.884.
Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 21.093/33.78, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.887/199.55, Was #18
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 15.797/86.37, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.878/199.82, Was #14
Grant was bumped a couple pairs ago. Both drivers broke the tires loose on the launch, shutting the engine off as the RPMs climbed skyward. No change and the remaining cars are already in the field, so there will be no more bumping in this session (but there will be a whole lot of shakin' goin' on).
Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.853/199.52, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.884/200.56, Was #16
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.899/199.29, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.877/198.99, Was #13
Alderman improved enough to move to the middle of the field, but Pawuk lost a lot of time early in the run and failed to improve, losing a spot in the process.
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.936/198.41, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.873/199.61, Was #11
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.874/199.35, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.859/200.08, Was #9
These two made the first really good runs in the first session, but Yates lost a lot of time early and AJ lost a couple hundredths somewhere along the way.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.861/199.70, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.860/201.58, Was #10
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.858/200.44, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.851/200.71, Was #5
No help here, but two good runs nonetheless.
Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.859/200.29, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.853/201.19, Was #7
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.936/199.49, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.841/200.05, Was #4
Pretty consistent runs for these two, Jeg losing a few thousandths and Allen improving a few thousandths.
Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.798/200.89, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.790/202.52, Was #1
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.840/200.47, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.840/201.10, Was #2
Line duplicated his first session elapsed time and Anderson lost a few thousandths and over one mile per hour from his earlier run. The session ends with Anderson still on top of the heap and Rickie Smith on the bump spot at 6.881.

Seward shook hard and coasted through. Humphrey was consistent on all four passes, but more than a tenth-and-a-half slower than he needed to have a chance.
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.011/196.19, Now #24

Carr's car shook and made a right turn on the launch, so he had to lift.
Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.949/198.06, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.887/199.55, Was #19

Both cars were 1.04 seconds for the first 60 feet, off the pace from the start.
Left Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.970/196.96, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.884/199.55, Was #18

Whisnant made a nice run last round, just missing the cutoff. Cuadra's car spun the tires and went to the right on the launch and his weekend was over. Whisnant had a 1.034 60-foot time, already behind his pace earlier today.
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.908/198.96, Now #17

Smith, with Dick Maskin power going for him, had a shot at bumping into the field. Edwards changed engines between rounds, looking for more power. Nope! Two clean, straight runs, but no help.
Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.930/198.41, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.880/200.38, Was #16
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 7.020/198.35, Now #15

Koretsky is safe, the field is set, now they are running for pairings - and you know Koretsky didn't want to face Greg Anderson in the first round. Coughlin's car also made a hard move to the right on the launch and he was out of luck.
Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.961/198.09, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.874/199.46, Was #12

After missing two races on speed, tying the 16th qualifier in elapsed time, Pawuk found himself safely in, but headed for a first-round match with Kurt Johnson. He spun the tires hard here and neither driver improved, so no changes.
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 7.004/197.31, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.873/199.61, Was #11
Right Lane: Steve Johns Runs 6.969/200.47, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.875/198.29, Was #13
Johns' car did a little sashay on the launch and he did a good job of saving the run.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.925/199.23, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.860/201.58, Was #10

No help here either...

Best prior run: 6.851/200.71, Was #5
Nice run by Morgan, the quickest so far this session.
Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.914/199.61, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.853/201.19, Was #7
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.970/199.52, Now #4

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.910/199.23, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.851/199.20, Was #6
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 7.058/198.38, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.841/201.13, Was #3
So far the left lane seems to be the better of the two for the Pro Stock racers, so look for the drivers with lane choice tomorrow to put their opponents in the right lane. KJ, in the right lane, made a very crooked run here, first right of the groove, then toward the centerline. He held on to it and finished the run, a brave effort.
Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.840/200.17, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.790/202.52, Was #1
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.871/200.26, Now #2

The dynamic duo finished qualifying in fine fashion, Anderson with a 1.017 60-foot time, matching Darrell Alderman for quickest 60-foot time of the round, then ran low ET of the round.

Results for Elimination Round 1
BRISTOL, Tenn. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by Quaker State:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Darrell Alderman (Mopar Stratus) 0.033 6.795 201.19
 (L) Allen Johnson (Mopar Stratus) 0.019 6.853 200.68
11:18 a.m. Current weather: temperature 55 degrees, relative humidity 51 percent, barometer 28.46 inches, adjusted altitude 1,649 feet, with a track temperature of 62 degrees.

This is Alderman's eighth start from the No. 8 qualifying position and the first time Allen Johnson has qualified for this home-state event in the last three years. AJ held a 4-3 edge against Alderman in prior meetings. Hey, it's got a Hemi!! The decision in this all-Mopar matchup went to Alderman, but AJ was off the line first. Alderman made the difference up in the first 60 feet and then edged ahead for a half-car-length win with our first "seventy" of the day (it won't be the last). Darrell Alderman's incremental margins: 60ft(0.001), 330 ft(0.013), 660ft(0.028), 1,000ft(0.038). MOV: 0.0448 seconds (approximately 13 feet).

 (W) Jeg Coughlin (Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier) 0.043 6.881 199.94
 (L) Warren Johnson (GM Performance Parts Grand A0.092 6.866 200.44
This is Jeg's 42nd start in a row, the longest current streak in Pro Stock. It's WJ's lowest start since Maple Grove last year, where he defeated Jeg in the first round. Jeg held a 22-20 edge in their 42 prior meetings. Jeg won this one on a holeshot, his cause aided when WJ's car did a bit of a dance on the launch. Jeg Coughlin's incremental margins: 60ft(0.035), 330 ft(0.030), 660ft(0.028), 1,000ft(0.032). MOV: 0.0345 seconds (approximately 10 feet).
 (W) Dave Connolly (Bullet Motorsports Cavalier) 0.028 6.824 201.88
 (L) Larry Morgan (Mopar Stratus) 0.081 6.837 201.46
Morgan has qualified in the top half of the field at every race this year. It's Connolly's 16th start in Pro Stock. Connolly beat the usually prompt Morgan off the line and was never headed. Dave Connolly's MOV: 0.0661 seconds (approximately 20 feet).
 (W) Kurt Johnson (AC Delco Cavalier) 0.096 6.794 201.82
 (L) Mark Pawuk (Summit Racing Grand Am) 0.028 14.798 55.74
KJ is the defending Pro Stock champion here and the 31st time he has started from the No. 3 position. He held a 15-6 edge against Pawuk in prior meetings, Pawuk making his third start of the season. Pawuk had a huge starting line advantage, then broke, the car nosing over sharply about 100 feet out.
 (W) Jason Line (KB Racing Grand Am) 0.058 6.789 202.00
 (L) Troy Coughlin (Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier) 0.036 8.188 121.50
This is Line's 10th start in Pro Stock, the fourth time the former Stock champion has qualified No. 2. Troy won Pro Stock here at the No-Bull event in 2000, but this is his first start this year, breaking a string of DNQs. Troy was away first, but his car went left on the launch, out of the groove, toward the centerline, then started fishtailing violently when he tried to bring it back. Line lowered the track elapsed time record on this run and will have lane choice against Jeg Coughlin next round.
 (W) Jim Yates (Sea Ray Boats Grand Am) 0.045 6.825 200.65
 (L) Ron Krisher (Valvoline Cavalier) 0.151 6.816 201.16
This is Krisher's second consecutive start after starting the season 0-4 and it's his best start since Memphis last year. He held a 10-3 edge against Yates, whose best finish here was a runner-up in 2001. Krisher spotted Yates a tenth of a second here and it was all over quickly. Yates faces KJ next round, Johnson with lane choice.
 (W) Greg Anderson (Vegas General Construction Gr0.062 6.771 202.30
 (L) Kenny Koretsky (Nitrofish Stratus) 0.065 6.829 201.94
This is Anderson's 11th straight No. 1 qualifier and he faces the 39th different opponent of his career in Kroetsky. Koretsky has won Pro Stock from the 16th starting position, at Maple Grove in 1989. They left together and that was bad news for Koretsky, Anderson pulling away at every incremental timer for the win. Greg Anderson's incremental margins: 60ft(0.020), 330 ft(0.037), 660ft(0.050), 1,000ft(0.057). MOV: 0.0613 seconds (approximately 18 feet). Anderson reclaimed the track elapsed time record on this run and will have lane choice against Alderman in the second round.
 (W) Bruce Allen (Reher-Morrison Grand Am) 0.020 6.799 200.41
 (L) Steve Johns (Sportlite Cavalier) 0.068 7.784 127.01
Former Competition Eliminator champion Johns is the 82nd different driver Allen has faced in his career. Allen nailed Johns to the tree and then Johns' car drifted out of the groove. Allen faces Connolly next round with a chance to take both Grumpy Jenkins engines out, Allen with lane choice.

Results for Elimination Round 2
BRISTOL, Tenn. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by Quaker State:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Bruce Allen (Reher-Morrison Grand Am) 0.043 6.815 200.11
 (L) Dave Connolly (Bullet Motorsports Cavalier) 0.041 10.871 78.69
12:45 p.m. Current weather conditions: 59 degrees, 48 percent relative humidity, the barometer 28.51 inches, adjusted altitude 1,840 feet, with a track temperature of 60 degrees.

In a long, successful career, Allen has never beaten Connolly, Connolly getting the win in both their prior meetings. It was a dead-even start, then something broke in Connolly's car and Allen got the win light.

 (W) Kurt Johnson (AC Delco Cavalier) 0.055 6.801 201.70
 (L) Jim Yates (Sea Ray Boats Grand Am) 0.056 6.847 200.29
These two have raced each other 41 times before today and it's as close to a dead-even series as possible, Yates with a 21-20 advantage. It was still dead-even at the green, then KJ edged ahead and stayed there to even their series tally. Kurt Johnson's incremental margins: 60ft(0.003), 330 ft(0.015), 660ft(0.029), 1,000ft(0.039). MOV: 0.0473 seconds (approximately 14 feet).
 (W) Jason Line (KB Racing Grand Am) 0.028 6.790 202.39
 (L) Jeg Coughlin (Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier) 0.037 21.153 51.14
Jeg needed a holeshot to have a chance against Anderson's team car, but it was Connolly leaving first, Jeg's car breaking on the launch. Line wins easily and will have lane choice against KJ in the semifinals.
 (W) Greg Anderson (Vegas General Construction Gr0.048 6.745 203.25
 (L) Darrell Alderman (Mopar Stratus) 0.049 9.355 90.47
Anderson held a 6-1 advantage over Alderman before today, Alderman's only win against Anderson coming at the Chicago race in 2001. Alderman's car headed for the centerline on the launch and Anderson ran away from him, resetting the track records once again. Greg Anderson's incremental times: 60ft-0.995 sec., 330ft-2.814, 660ft-4.332/161.96mph, 1,000ft-5.641, and, of course, he has lane choice against Allen in the semifinals.

Results for Elimination Round 3
BRISTOL, Tenn. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by Quaker State:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jason Line (KB Racing Grand Am) 0.012 6.773 202.30
 (L) Kurt Johnson (AC Delco Cavalier) 0.028 6.822 202.24
2:03 p.m. Current weather conditions: 59 degrees, 47 percent relative humidity, the barometer 28.53 inches, adjusted altitude 1,854 feet, with a track temperature of 74 degrees.

Amazingly, KJ came into this race with a 3-0 record against Line. However, against jeg Coughlin in the second round, Line showed that he can cut a light with the best of them and he has had the performance edge this weekend. Line was away first with a psychic light and then motored away from Johnson when Johnson's Cavalier was a bit tail-happy on the launch. Jason Line's MOV: 0.0655 seconds (approximately 19 feet).

 (W) Greg Anderson (Vegas General Construction Gr0.077 6.750 202.97
 (L) Bruce Allen (Reher-Morrison Grand Am) 0.070 6.858 200.65
Anderson came in with a 9-3 record against Allen, Allen's last round win against Anderson coming in the first Chicago event in 2002. Anderson only gave up 0.007 on the tree, but made it up with a 0.994 60-foot time against Allen's very good 1.008 and was never headed after that. Greg Anderson's MOV: 0.1012 seconds (approximately 30 feet) and he will pick the lanes against teammate Line in the final round.

Results for Final Round
BRISTOL, Tenn. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by Quaker State:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Greg Anderson (Vegas General Construction Gr0.025 6.754 203.12
 (L) Jason Line (KB Racing Grand Am) 0.030 6.790 202.94
3:28 p.m. Current weather: temperature 59 degrees, relative humidity 50 percent, barometer 28.51 inches, adjusted altitude 1,870 feet, with a track temperature of 70 degrees.

There have been three first-time winners so far, can Line make it four? For the second race in a row, he lines up against team captain Anderson in the final round. It was a good race, but Anderson was away first and was never headed, winning by half a car length. Greg Anderson's incremental margins: 60ft(0.024), 330 ft(0.031), 660ft(0.036), 1,000ft(0.039). MOV: 0.0419 seconds (approximately 12 feet). It's his fifth win in six events this year, his 21st win over all.
