We open with a tire smoker in both lanes. Herbert has the worst smoke of the pair and something goes away in the engine. Dixon has holes out but crosses the stripe under power. Bernstein's lowest qualifying spot was at Englishtown and it was 6th as well. Cory Mac has a wild ride as the Berryman dragster has the front wheels climb high into the sky before 100 feet. He has to lift and Bernstein gets his first round win of the new season. (W) David Grubnic (Kalitta Air Dragster) 0.127 4.563 299.93 (L) Scott Palmer (O'Reilly Auto Parts Dragster) -9.999(R) NT-No Show Palmer is a no show after huge huge wheel stand yesterday in qualifying. Grubnic hasn't pinched himself yet and cards yet another fifty on his single run. He lifted just before the lights and you can see that reflected in his speed. (W) Darrell Russell (Amato Racing Dragster) 0.097 4.531 320.89 (L) John Smith (Prestone Dragster) 0.087 4.728 259.86 Russell has qualified for 71 straight races since he began his career driving for Joe Amato. Smith has his streak of first round wins at the Winternationals stop a two. Russell appeared to slap the pedal once during the run but we have another low fifty. Smith disappeared behind a wall of smoke at the stripe but there's nothing on the track. Russell has lane choice over Grubnic next round. (W) Clay Millican (104+ Octane Boost Dragster) 0.073 4.545 316.60 (L) Brady Kalivoda (Bill Miller Engineering Drag0.059 4.661 311.92 Baca DNDd in the first event of his career but has now qualified in 25 straight. Millican is 20-23 in rounds of NHRA racing but he gets another added to the win column here. Kalivoda did his job and left on Millican but he just didn't have enough to keep that lead. Millican will have lane choice over Bernstein in round two. (W) Tony Schumacher (U.S. Army Dragster) 0.091 4.451 332.18 (L) Rhonda Hartman-Smith (Fram Filters Dragster)0.040 4.613 314.17 A bit of a surprise when you read the career stats for these two. Schumacher is 5-5 against Hartman-Smith for his career. This is the 145th start for Schumacher and the 98th for Hartman-Smith. This one was never in doubt. Schumacher was second off the lights but had caught Hartman-Smith before 330. He runs both low ET and top speed of the event. That's a ne track record ET but just short on the mph. Needless to say Schumacher has lane choice over Baca. (W) Doug Kalitta (MAC Tools Dragster) 0.080 4.533 331.36 (L) Scott Weis (Race Girl Dragster) 0.088 6.059 133.94 This was the 17th top qualifying position for Doug Kalitta and he's been #1 more than any other position. He's 7-1 against Weis and adds another one here. Weis has tire smoke and a flash from the engine before his racer fell silent. Kalitta takes the win and lane choice over Dixon. That's the final pair of the first round and we move on to Funny Car.

POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 44th annual K&N Filters Winternationals: W/L Driver RT ET Speed (W) Brandon Bernstein (Budweiser/Lucas Oil Drags0.061 4.487 331.61 (L) Clay Millican (104+ Octane Boost Dragster) 0.057 4.556 308.85 12:58 p.m. Current weather conditions: 62 degrees, 51 percent relative humidity, the barometer 28.96 inches, with a track temperature of 76 degrees, corrected altitude 1513. Even start but Millican is wandering all over the left lane. He still runs a good number but Bernstein was even better. Bernstein becomes a member of the 4.4 club and runs over 331 mph. Both are career bests for him. (W) Doug Kalitta (MAC Tools Dragster) 0.045 4.482 330.15 (L) Larry Dixon (Miller Lite Dragster) 0.109 4.598 316.15 Kalitta throws up another 4.4 and can't be headed. Dixon was a bit late off the line and could only watch as the red car pulled away from him. (W) David Grubnic (Kalitta Air Dragster) 0.029 4.492 321.35 (L) Darrell Russell (Amato Racing Dragster) 0.076 4.522 323.74 Now it's Grubnic that joins the 4.4 club. Grubnic doesn't run the big speed at the finish but he was running 278.75 at half track. Russell gave up almost .05 at the hit and just couldn't pull up on the streaking Aussie. Doug Kalitta will have lane choice over Grubnic in the battle of the 4.4 cars. (W) Tony Schumacher (U.S. Army Dragster) 0.064 4.486 331.20 (L) David Baca (American Racing Dragster) 0.133 9.634 79.68 Not bad for a parking lot folks. That's four 4.4s in a row on a racing surface that's only used three times a year. Baca tried to match the numbers but smoked the tires from about 150 feet. Schumacher will have lane choice over Bernstein by .001 seconds. What a match up that will be.

How do you set up this pairing? Both cars ran 4.4 in the last round and the drivers are at the top of their games. Just about an even start but it's Schumacher with another shot. Bernstein's car looked just a bit soft and it showed on the score boards at the end of the track. (W) Doug Kalitta (MAC Tools Dragster) 0.069 4.511 284.33 (L) David Grubnic (Kalitta Air Dragster) 0.096 5.283 171.90 Grubnic was just a taste and things went downhill from there. There was a flash from the engine before half track and Grubnic clicked it. Kalitta ONLY runs a 4.5 due to the fact that he pitched the blower belt at about 1100 feet. Schumacher will have lane choice in the final.

POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 44th annual K&N Filters Winternationals: W/L Driver RT ET Speed (W) Tony Schumacher (U.S. Army Dragster) 0.135 4.659 243.55 (L) Doug Kalitta (MAC Tools Dragster) -9.999(R) NT-Broke Before Staging 4:44 p.m. Current weather conditions: 62 degrees, 59 percent relative humidity, the barometer 28.92 inches, with a track temperature of 69 degrees, corrected altitude 1718 feet.. Doug Kalitta comes into this fianl round with a record of 15-7 while Tony Schumacher is 11-20. Ok, this has been an odd weekend so why stop now. Both cars made the burnout but after they retuned to the line there were large puffs of flame out of the right bank of Kalitta's car. Fuel was pouring out of the pipes and it appeared there might have been a ruptured fuel line. Two crewmen were knocked down and one appeared to get a face full of burning nitro. After it was over the crew folks appeared ok but could only watch as Schumacher singled for the win.
