Division 6 driver Rhyne dies in testing accident

3/31/2003

Don Rhyne, the popular winner of the 2002 Ernie Hall Memorial Person of the Year award in Division 6, died March 28 at Tucson Medical Center as the result of injuries suffered March 27 at Southwestern Int'l Raceway before the start of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Rhyne was driving his Super Gas '63 Corvette roadster when it went off the end of the track and flipped.

Rhyne, 54, from Boring, Ore., was the 1999 Division 6 Super Comp champion. The veteran racer also drove a Super Comp dragster. He owned three other cars, a Super Gas roadster that Kyle Seipel was going to race this year, a Super Comp dragster and another Super Gas '27 Ford roadster that Anthony Castillo drove, a SS/GT Firebird that Adam Bowdish was going to drive, and a '00 Firebird Stocker that Fred Deuchar was slotted to compete with.

Through his commercial painting business in Portland, Paint Oriented Services (POS), Rhyne sponsored Steve Federlin's Top Alcohol Dragster, Scott Taylor's Super Comp and Super Gas cars and the motorcycle of 2002 Division 6 Kerker Sportsman Motorcycle champion Leeland King. Rhyne also sponsored the Jr. Dragster program at Woodburn Dragstrip.

The funeral service will be April 8 at 1 p.m. at New Hope Community Church, 11731 S.E. Stevens Rd, Portland, OR 97266.

Rhyne is survived by his wife, Geri, and a son, Chris.
