Top Alcohol Dragster class parity issue addressed
3/10/2003
Prior to the beginning of the 2003 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, the NHRA Competition Committee met and reviewed the issue of parity between the injected nitro cars and the supercharged alcohol cars in the Top Alcohol Dragster category. Based on a review of 2002 season race results and statistical data available at that time, the committee overwhelmingly agreed to not change the rules going into the 2003 season.
Several of the factors that contributed to the Competition Committee's decision were as follows:
1. Top Alcohol Dragster participation levels have steadily increased over the last two seasons and have reached their highest level in four years. A key factor in the increasing level of class participation can be attributed to the NHRA's commitment to not change rules and allow everyone to race with the confidence that they will not have to continually spend money to change their combinations every season.
2. The win/loss ratio between the two combinations, in actual competition during 2002, indicated that a high degree of parity does exist. An analysis of the 16 national events at which alcohol cars competed revealed that 40 percent of the Top Alcohol Dragster entries were A/FD cars, while 60 percent were blown alcohol cars. Of the 40 percent population of A/FD cars, rounds won equaled 38 percent. Of the 60 percent of blown alcohol entries, rounds won equaled 62 percent. Further analysis showed that of the 141 times A/Fuel cars ran against blown alcohol cars, 48 percent of the wins went to A/Fuel cars, while 52 percent of the wins went to blown alcohol cars, verifying a high degree of parity on a one to one race basis.
Going forward, the Competition Committee will continue to monitor the Top Alcohol Dragster parity issue as the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season progresses. However, no specific changes to either combination will be considered at this time.
