NHRA Tech clarifies Ford FE oil pan usage
2/28/2003
Following requests from Stock racers and manufacturers, the NHRA technical department has completed an extensive review of the Ford FE oil pan issue. The technical staff studied many aspects of the Ford FE pan to determine proper avenues to offer similar deep-sump oiling units as acceptable Stock replacements. From this study, the following rule clarification on the use of Stock replacement Ford FE deep-sump oil pans has been released.
As Ford offered the oil pan as an option for the Ford FE family engine from the factory, the tech department has decided to allow certain deep-sump oil pans to be used in Stock eliminator.
Under the rule clarification, to constitute an accepted replacement Ford FE deep-sump oil pan, the unit must keep the appearance of the OEM deep-sump oil pan (i.e., length, width, depth, and configuration), which currently includes the Milodon replacement oil pan (part no. 31130).
"The decision to allow the use of Stock replacement designs for the Ford FE family was based heavily on the limited availability of stock units in the marketplace, and the increasing cost differential between the factory original compared to the Stock replacement pan," said Danny Gracia, National Tech Director. "As we reviewed this growing dilemma, it became apparent that NHRA needed to develop a path to help the Ford FE racers. By creating a certain criteria these pans must meet, it affords the Ford racing public the chance to utilize a Stock replacement oil pan at an affordable cost."
This rule clarification on the use of the Stock replacement Ford FE oil pan applies to all of the FE family engines within Stock eliminator.
