Racer Soundoff: Evolving Super Street

08/01/2003

Based on the fact that NHRA has three Super-class categories that follow nearly identical rules, is it time to get back to the basics with one of these Super categories? In recent months, many racers have been asking this very question: Should Super Street become NHRA's non-electronics index class?

After compiling information from many sources, the NHRA technical department has developed a skeleton proposal that could be considered for implementation in the near future based on further racer input. Key element of the proposal includes:

  • Keep the standard 10.90 index
  • Use a heads-up start and .5-second Pro Tree.
  • Prohibit the use of timed throttle stops that are use pneumatics and/or electronics to modulate the throttle after initial launch.
  • Prohibit the use of a delay box or delay device.
  • Limit the use of electronics to a transbrake and a two/three step, mirroring the current Super Stock electronics rules.

The NHRA technical department wants the racers opinion and if implementing the proposed changes into the Super Street category is a viable option.

Send your comments, concerns, and opinions on the proposed restructuring of Super Street to racerinput@nhra.com.
