Division 3 racer Burghard dies in accident

4/5/2003

Phil Burghard, a veteran Super Gas racer in NHRA Division 3 from Worthington, Ohio, died from injuries suffered in an accident during Saturday's time trials for the NHRA Spring Sportsman Challenge XI at Gateway International Raceway.

Burghard, 33, was driving a 2003 Corvette that had just made a second time trial attempt of 9.873 seconds at 155.67 mph, before the car went out of control at the end of the racetrack and crashed. Track officials said the car crashed at full speed in the sand traps at the end of the shutdown area.

Burghard was transported by air to St. Louis University Hospital Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead several hours later. A hospital official said an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Burghard finished 15th in the 2002 NHRA Division 3 point standings in Super Gas.
