NHRA announces new structure for FWD Stock classes
11/17/2003
After receiving input from a number of competitors, the NHRA Competition Committee has developed a new structure for the front-wheel-drive vehicles that currently compete within Stock. Beginning in 2004, all front-wheel-drive vehicles will fall under four class weight breaks, updating the previous announcement that the front-wheel-drive vehicles would by absorbed into the Stock category's classifications.
"Many of the front-wheel-drive cars would be eliminated if we blended all the FWD specific classes into the normal categories simply because of the nature of the cars," said Len Imbrogno, NHRA Director of Sportsman Racing and Member Tracks. "It would be very difficult for them to be at all competitive. I have spoken with several front-wheel-drive racers and they agree that a consolidation is better than the alternative of totally doing away with the classes. The input provided by a number of front-wheel-drive racers, combined with input from the NHRA Stock/Super Stock committee, is an example of how issues can be resolved by working together for the betterment of everyone concerned."
Below are the changes for the front-wheel-drive categories for 2004:
Combine sticks and automatics into the same class. To accommodate different combinations, horsepower will be adjusted as necessary.
All stick combinations will receive a minimum 100-pound additional weight adjustment to bring the performance of those combinations more in-line with that of the automatic combinations.
Move the top weight break factor in AF/S from 15.00 to 16.00 pounds per cubic inch, thereby eliminating a weight break for anything under 16.00 pounds.
The front-wheel-drive categories will compete under the following weight breaks:
AF/S: 16.00 to 17.49
BF/S: 17.50 to 18.99
CF/S: 19.00 to 24.99
DF/S: 25.00 or more
