2003 Lucas Oil Super Comp
champion Jack Beckman
Forgotten, like everyone, when Gary Stinnett cracked the 600-point mark this summer, Jack Beckman won 13 consecutive rounds over the last two events of the year to score an unlikely, come-from-behind first national championship.

Beckman, a driving instructor at Frank Hawley's Drag Racing School and lifelong fan who still runs to the stands when the fuel cars race, outdrove a field of nearly 200 at the last and annually the biggest divisional event of the season, the Division 7 closer in Las Vegas. He was barely in the top 10 when he let go of the button in the first round, but eight rounds later, he was headed to NHRA's season closer, the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, ranked second in points.

Etterman, Branch, Bar's join forces for 2004
Two NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car powerhouse teams have joined forces as George and Jane Etterman have partnered with defending three-time Division 4 Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion Tate Branch for the 2004 season. Bar's Leaks will return as the team's primary sponsor.

The NHRA Stock/Super Stock Committee has reviewed written requests received by Nov. 30, 2003, from Lucas Oil Sportsman racers in its evaluation of specific Stock and Super Stock horsepower adjustments and has made changes effective Jan. 1, 2004.

Top Sportsman featured at SPORTSnationals

NHRA ammends Jeg's Allstars Comp CIC rule
Over the past several years, there have been a number of Competition Eliminator racers concerned about runs at the Jeg's Allstars counting as permanent CIC index hits. After reviewing this issue, the NHRA Division Directors and the NHRA Competition Committee agreed with the racers thinking and will no longer count any Jeg's Allstar runs towards a permanent CIC.

2003 Lucas Super Gas champ Bryan Robinson
It was only natural that Bryan Robinson, following in the footsteps of father Johnny, who enjoyed a successful career in bracket competition for more than 25 years, would excel in drag racing at an early age. This season, Robinson ran the full schedule of eight divisional and six national events, competing with both his Super Gas Corvette and Super Comp dragster, and finished the season as the 2003 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series national champion in Super Gas.

Changes to Super Stock cylinder head rules
The NHRA Technical Department has released a rules change affecting the combustion chamber of Super Stock cylinder heads. This amendment to the 2004 NHRA Rulebook is effective immediately.

Indy winner Jeff Craig to sit out 2004
Frank Parker, team owner for the 2003 U.S. Nationals-winning ParkerTech Racing Services Alcohol Funny Car has announced that Jeff Craig has decided not to drive the Lane Automotive Dodge RT in 2004.Craig's difficult decision to step aside was made to devote more time to family and work.
