Houston Raceway Park undergoes extensive renovations

12/4/2003

Houston Raceway Park, home of the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals, has begun a major resurfacing project on its quarter-mile dragstrip. The project will add 260 feet to the existing concrete starting line and feature a completely new surface on the remaining asphalt track and quarter-mile shutdown area.

Angel Brothers Construction will complete the project in a timely manner, enabling the track to remain open on all but two of its scheduled race nights.

The additional surface will bring the concrete portion of the racing surface to 660 feet. The remaining surface will feature a special asphalt mix designed to withstand the 8,000-horsepower, 330-mph cars that race there each season.

"It's great to have concerned owners who reinvest in a facility that remains a model to all other tracks," said Gerald Critchfield, the track's general manager. Don and Marie Gay and Greg, Glenn, and Gary Angel own Houston Raceway Park. "These families take great pride in their relationship with the racing community and want to provide the best at all times."
