Gann to semifinals, still No. 2 in points
Memphis, Monday: After rain forced a one day postponement to the opening round of Pro Stock Bike (PSB), Shawn Gann, aboard the Mac Tools/Berryman Products Suzuki, did battle with Steve Johnson today in the opening round as PSB finally took to the Memphis Motorsports Park quarter-mile track.
In the match up against Johnson, it was Gann from start to finish and moved Gann to the quarterfinals against Mike Berry. Against Berry, Gann made the win look easy once again, running the quickest elapsed time of the quarterfinals, a 7.219.
In the semifinals, Showers used a .117 second advantage at the green light to take a holeshot victory over Gann. Gann recorded a pass of 7.243 seconds at 182.03 mph to 7.251 seconds at 182.16 mph for Showers.
On the other side of the ladder, Angelle Savoie gave Fred Collis a gift when she red-lighted negating her 7.169 second elapsed time. Collis, who advanced to the finals against Showers, ran an elapsed time of 7.246 seconds.
Just as Savoie handed Collis a free ride into the final round, Collis handed Showers a free ride into the winner's circle. For Showers it's his second consecutive win, having won the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indy. He also won the K&N Filters Pro Bike Klash, a special race-within-a-race, also held at Indy.
With the win, Showers moved into third in the NHRA POWERade PSB point standings. Geno Scali, with 929 points, remained in the top spot, 113 points ahead of No. 2 Gann. Gann has 816 points, 30 points ahead of Showers, who has 786 points. Three-time and reigning PSB champion Angelle Savoie dropped to fourth and now has 768 points.
Gann nails down the third spot in Memphis

Gann from Stoneville, N.C. followed Angelle Savoie, who qualified No. 1 and Geno Scali, who placed No. 2. He ran elapsed times of 7.133 seconds, 7.187 seconds, 7.125 seconds and 7.158 seconds in his four qualifying session.
