Troy improves but misses the cut
St. Louis, Saturday: Troy Coughlin drove his JEG'S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier started the second day of qualifying from the No. 23 position.
In the third qualifying session Troy posted a 6.912 at 200.29 mph. The run was not an improvement and he remained in the No. 23 slot with one opportunity to break into the 16-car field for race day.
The final session gave Troy Coughlin the stage to make his best run of the weekend. The JEG'S mail Order Chevy Cavalier powered to a weekend best run of 6.867 at 200.92 mph. Troy was eventually bumped out of the 16-car field by the end of the session.
"We found what the car was asking for," said Troy. "It was just a little late. It was a good feeling to make such a strong run in the final session."
Troy looks to improve
St. Louis, Friday: Troy Coughlin drove his JEG'S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier to a 6.898 at 200.00 mph. He landed in the No. 18 position and will have three opportunities to improve before the field is set for race day. Troy was a mere .004 seconds shy being in the quick sixteen on his first attempt.
"We have some room for improvement," said Troy. " We made a straight run from point A to B and that's a good way to start the weekend."
In the second qualifying session the yellow and black JEG'S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier was glowing under the lights. Troy ran a 6.893 at 200.59 mph. His run was an improvement and he remained just south of the bump spot.
"We will work on improving tomorrow (Saturday)," explained Troy. "We will spend a lot of time as a group before we make another run and put our best foot forward."
Coughlin looking forward
St. Louis, pre-race: Troy Coughlin and his yellow and black Jeg's Mail Order Chevy Cavalier are looking ahead to the second half of the season. The 38-year-old knows there is nothing that can be done about the past other than learn from it.
Coughlin is looking to start his march into the top-ten from the No. 18 position in the NHRA POWERade championship. He has 258 points at the halfway point of the 2003 season and is looking to aggressively double the amount of points in the second-half of the season.
"We are focused on having a strong second half of the season and getting into the top-ten," Coughlin said. "The evolution that our team has gone through lately should put us in a position to be a true two-car team threat for the remainder of the season."
