He qualified in the 8th position at that event, so advancing from the middle of the pack is not foreign to him. Gilbertson has had limited success this season, winning in the first round in the first two events of the year and losing in the first round in Gainesville.
These guys were side-by-side all the way down the track, an excellent drag race!

That's the good news. He only has one round win this season, against Dean Skuza in Phoenix. Tony Pedregon won the Winternationals in Pomona to begin the season, then lost in the second round in both Phoenix and Gainesville.Force dropped a cylinder on the hit, pushing the car toward the retaining wall. He was almost sideways at half track and he had to click it off.
(W) Gary Densham (AAA of So. Cal. Mustang) 0.068 4.856 321.12 (L) Dale Creasy Jr. (Craftsman Firebird) 0.054 6.197 146.32Creasy has struggled so far this year, a DNQ in Pomona and first round losses in Phoenix and Gainesville. Densham is coming in to this event with a round W/L record of 7-2 for the first three events, losing in the final round in Phoenix and winning it all in Gainesville.Creasy was on a good pass until about 500 feet. The car got out of shape at half track and he had to lift.
(W) Whit Bazemore (Matco Tools Stratus) 0.064 4.812 323.58 (L) Jack Wyatt (Piranaz Firebird) 0.121 12.135 89.31This is the first race of this season that Bazemore qualified in the top spot, though he hasn't been too far from the top in the first three races-his worst qualifying effort was in Phoenix where he qualified in the 6th position. He advanced to the semi-final rounds in both Phoenix and Gainesville.Wyatt was up in smoke almost immediately.
(W) Tommy Johnson Jr. (Skoal Racing Camaro) 0.068 4.804 321.04 (L) Bob Bode (Promotorsports\Arbee Firebird) 0.066 8.915 88.73Johnson has two round wins so far this season, both at the Winternationals where he beat John Force and Whit Bazemore before losing to Tony Pedregon.Bode struck the tires at about 150 feet and his day was over. Johnson, with his quickest pass of the weekend, will have lane choice in round two over Del Worsham.

Capps won it all in Phoenix, has not lost in the first round so far this year and is currently in second place in the points.Gray had this race won until he lost the blower belt at 900 feet.
(W) Frank Pedregon (K&N Filters Firebird) 0.074 4.879 316.30 (L) Cruz Pedregon (Advance Auto Parts Firebird) 0.081 5.973 159.91Cruz is looking for his first round win of this year. His brother Frank has two round wins this season, both occuring in Phoenix.Cruz got out of the groove and close to the wall on the top half of the track. Frank will give lane choice to Gary Densham in round two.
(W) Scotty Cannon (Oakley Firebird) 0.074 4.976 252.99 (L) Dean Skuza (Cornwell Tools Firebird) 0.060 DQ-CenterlineCannon is searching for his first round win of the 2003 season, while Skuza is looking for his second round win of the year.Skuza got way out of shape, crossed the centerline and took out a half-track timing cone. Cannon was having problems of his own, mixing up cylinders at about 800 feet and he blew the burst panel at 1000 feet. He will give up lane choice to Whit Bazemore in the second round.

Bazemore lost traction at half track, moved very close to the retaining wall at 1000 feet and blew up his engine as he crossed the finish line. This was the tenth time in a row that Bazemore has beaten Cannon in eliminations.(W) Tony Pedregon (Castrol Syntec Mustang) 0.055 4.919 279.32 (L) Ron Capps (Skoal Racing Camaro) 0.062 7.281 118.44Capps struck the tires at 200 feet and tried to drive through it without success. The car was almost sideways at 400 feet. Pedregon advances to the semifinal round with his slowest pass of the weekend. Apparently he lost the engine in the shutdown area as the Safety Safari is working on the surface at the end of the track.(W) Gary Densham (AAA of So. Cal. Mustang) 0.262 4.887 308.78 (L) Frank Pedregon (K&N Filters Firebird) -9.999(R) NT-No ShowDensham gets a free ride into the semis to face Tony Pedregon, and Densham will have lane choice. Frank Pedregon was unable to make the call to the line for this round. The word in the pressroom is, Frank Pedregon had some ignition problems that they couldn't solve.

Cal. Mustang) 0.071 10.289 93.582:54 PM Pedregon's crew hustled to get the car into the staging lanes in time for this round. Densham was up in smoke at about 200 feet. Pedregon may have hurt the engine at the end of this pass as the car had to be towed from the shutdown area.(W) Whit Bazemore (Matco Tools Stratus) 0.044 4.899 319.22 (L) Tommy Johnson Jr. (Skoal Racing Camaro) 0.055 4.986 248.89Bazemore left first but Johnson had erased the deficit by the 60-foot mark. It looked like Johnson was going to win this race, but smoke started trailing from the rear of the car at about 1000 feet. The car was extremely close to the retaining wall at half track.
