5:09 PM This is Smith's first final round appearance in NHRA Top Fuel competition, making his first Top Fuel start here in 1998. The Bernstein family has fond memories of Gainesville, it's the site of Kenny Bernstein's historic 300 mph run in 1992 and of Brandon's first Top Fuel test runs, last year, following the Gatornationals. One other note of interest - a driver named Smith has not defeated a driver named Bernstein since 1980, when John's father, Paul, defeated Kenny Bernstein at Baton Rouge.

It was Bernstein all the way, away first and pulling steadily away to win handily. Smith left second and his car slipped out of the groove, pretty much ending his chances early in the race. he muscled the car back to the groove, but Bernstein was long gone by then. Heady stuff, the rookie has won two of the first three events in the 2003 season, picking up where his father left off.

5:05 PM Densham has four career victories since joining John Force racing in the 2001 season. This is his second straight final round appearance and the 15th of his career. If he wins this race he will take the lead in Funny Car points. Densham is 4-12 against Worsham, Worsham winning the last one at last year's spring race in Chicago.

Worsham gets off the line first but Densham reeled him in by the sixty-foot mark. He started pulling away but started moving around a little at half-track. He kept it in the lane and hung on for the win.

Gary Densham's incremental margins: 60ft(0.002), 330 ft(0.010), 660ft(0.002), 1,000ft(0.007). MOV: 0.0165 seconds (approximately 8 feet).

Densham is now number one in the points for only the second time in his career.

This was a great drag race, almost identical lights and the two never more than 0.014 seconds apart. Jeg led to half track, then KJ led to the finish line. Kurt Johnson's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.007), 330 ft(-0.003), 660ft(0.001), 1,000ft(0.007). MOV: 0.0140 seconds (approximately 4 feet).

4:50 PM The track has cooled off to 96 degrees, with an overcast, so traction should be better than it has been all day. Craig got the light, but his car was all over the lane, shaking, and Newberry went right down the groove with yet another mid-sixty elapsed time. That's 41 national event wins for "Newb."
