"We're planning to run at least 13 races but if this thing takes off the way we hope it will then the possibility of switching to Top Fuel one day is wide open."

Following a successful test drive at the recently completed divisional event in Memphis, Tenn., driver Gary Ormsby Jr. will take over the seat of Randy Meyer's A-Fuel Injected Nitro Top Alcohol Dragster effective immediately. The pair will officially debut their new rail with title sponsorship from newcomer Race Day Cigars at this weekend's 15th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil.
"We've been working on this deal for over a year and to finally put it together is an awesome feeling," said Ormsby Jr., the son of the late Gary Ormsby, the 1989 Top Fuel series champion. "We're very excited about the Race Day Cigars sponsorship and the continued assistance of Smokes 4 Less. Bringing these two deals to the table was a big part in my getting this ride."
Meyer drove the car to a fourth place finish in the Division 5 standings in 2001. He will now switch his attention to the role of crew chief. Ormsby Jr., meanwhile, spent the majority of last season as a crewman on Brandon Bernstein's Top Alcohol Dragster.
"Randy's has been around for a long time," Ormsby Jr. said. "He even raced Top Fuel back when my dad was running. He loves to drive but he's always wanted a big-time sponsor on the car. This deal came along and the upside potential is just so huge that he couldn't refuse.
"We're planning to run at least 13 races but if this thing takes off the way we hope it will then the possibility of switching to Top Fuel one day is wide open. In fact, the more money that comes in this year the more races we'll attend."
Even though he lives in Sacramento, Calif., Ormsby Jr. and Meyer will challenge for the Division 5 title in the Midwest due to Meyer's and their new sponsor's central location. The group plans to compete at the national events in Houston, Englishtown, N.J., Topeka, Kan., Columbus, Ohio, Brainerd, Minn., Indianapolis, Reading, Pa., Dallas, and Pomona, Calif.
"I'm so excited I can't even sleep," Ormsby Jr. said. "I jumped in the car in Memphis and I guess it had been awhile because it really got my attention. You tend to forget just how fast and quick these things are. Randy's car is a beauty. It drives like a Cadillac.
"Hopefully, we can win some races and get a bunch of attention for Race Day Cigars. If things go well we could really have some fun out there, starting right now in Houston. I won this race in 2000. In fact, it was the last win I've had so it's time to get the ball rolling again."
