NHRA defines implementation date of dragster helmet bars

09/11/2002

The NHRA Competition Committee has defined the implementation of the SFI 2.7A rule that requires a helmet guard on all dragsters, as stated in the NHRA Rulebook. The specification calls for all first-time certifications to meet these requirements. Additionally, all 2.7A chassis recertifications done on or after Oct. 1, 2002, will need to conform to the specification. This implementation date also applies to SFI Specs 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, and 10.1.

The 1 x .058-inch tubing must to be installed all the way around the roll cage at a height approximately halfway between the top of the roll cage and the shoulder hoops, but not to obstruct the driver's vision. This is required for both five- and six-point roll cages. The tubing is to add some lateral support to the entire roll-cage assembly.

The implementation of the SFI 2.7A chassis spec was originally extended from its initial 2002 mandate to give all competitors ample time install the tubing on their dragsters.
