IHRA Rookie of the Year moves to NHRA
05/23/2002
John Vouros, the 2001 IHRA Pro Rookie of the Year, will make his first ever NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car appearance at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division 1 points meet at Maple Grove Raceway, Reading, Pa., this weekend.
Vouros, who is known for consistently being near the top of the IHRA field, realizes that the NHRA could be different. "This is gonna be a whole new ball game for us. We know we have a good car and a better than average crew, but Division 1 is tough. Look at all the heavy hitters, Manzo, Newberry, and a ton of others. I mean if we can do well at the divisional level, I think we will be able to step up to the NHRA national scene real soon," said Vouros.
Crew chief Tom Anderson, no stranger to NHRA tracks; he feels that the switch to the NHRA Sportsman competition is not a step down from the IHRA Pro ranks. "I really like running the IHRA, I've had some great success there in recent years, but we need to get this team some more exposure. We plan on running some more IHRA event, but our main focus now is the NHRA. The competition in the NHRA may be a little tight near the top, but we should fit in fine. I don't care what they classify these cars at Pro or Sportsman. That's just for bookkeepers. Any of these classes, Alky Funny Car or Dragster are just as tough and competitive as the nitro classes," said the veteran tuner.
The CompetitionPlus.com Funny Car team is planing on running the entire Div. 1 schedule as well as a limited NHRA national event schedule.
