British-based Alcohol Dragster team will compete in Pomona
01/22/2002
The England-based American Car Imports Racing Top Alcohol Dragster team has purchased a new chassis in Canada, which they will campaign at the NHRA K&N Filters Winternationals before shipping the car home for the beginning of their European racing season. Their aim is to become the first British Top Alcohol team to qualify at an American national event in more than 10 years.
American Car Imports Racing has the quickest team in the United Kingdom, having run a best of 5.724 at 243.15 mph with their previous car. They have numerous British and FIA European championship event wins to their credit and were voted "Most Professional Team" in England in 1999. The team hopes to win its first European championship this season.
Driver Dave Wilson, who has been driving Top Alcohol Dragsters in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe since 1980, won the British NDRC Top Alcohol championship in 1984 and 1986 after returning from a horrific crash that broke his neck and destroyed his car. Wilson also builds the team's engines and performs any necessary machining and fabrication work. This is the first time he has competed in the United States.
"With many of our customers regular drag racing spectators, we are determined to enhance the natural association of the American vehicle scene and drag racing in the U.K.," commented Anthony Cohen, Director of American Car Imports, the United Kingdom's market leader in supplying new and late-model American cars, trucks and vans.
"This is the opportunity of a lifetime for a European team to be able to compete at an NHRA national event," added American Car Imports Racing crew chief Andy Bissett. "The whole team is totally pumped up to race the best in the world at what we do in their own backyard."
Sony PlayStation and HGC Scaffolding are associate partners with the team and Total Design, Custom Graphics, Master Repairs and Air Sea Logistics are also supporting its USA venture and extensive 2002 European racing schedule.
Wilson's wife and son, Linda and David, are part of the team. They are joined by Crew Chief Andy Bissett and crewmen Fred Willbanks and Ricky Packham. For this race previous car owner Bob Haffner will also assist the team.
The designer of the team's new PSI supercharger, Norm Drazy, and accomplished NHRA racer Mike Johnson will provide tuning advice.
