Federlin and Andreotti close Northwest Division season with wins

MEDFORD, Ore. - In the final results of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event being held at Southern Oregon Dragway, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Steve Federlin and Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Mike Andreotti earned victories in their respective fields.

Federlin, of Oregon City, Ore., earned the win in Top Alcohol Dragster when he defeated, the class points leader Brandon Johnson, of Shelton, Wash., in the final. In the opening round Federlin took out Michael Cofini and strong rookie racer Morgan Lucas in the semifinals, before meeting Johnson in the final. In the final round Federlin ran a 5.516-second pass at 254.46 mph to defeat Johnson, who fouled at the start.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Andreotti of Colusa, Calif., laid down a 5.883-second pass at 242.26 mph to take the win over Woodbridge, Calif., driver Larry Minor, who broke on his burnout. This is Andreotti's first win of the season after a runner-up finish earlier in June at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

Winners in other categories are Jeff Gillette of Benicia, Calif., in Comp Eliminator, Howard Thompson of Wildomar, Calif., in Super Stock; Ken Etter of Riverside, Calif., in Stock; Chris Newman of Lancaster, Calif., in Super Comp; Kevin Reily of Santa Clara, Calif., in Super Gas; and Randy Sides of Yakima, Wash., in Super Street. The NHRA Kerker E.T. Motorcycle Champion was Steve Miller of Yakima, Wash.

Lucas and Austin grab top spots at Southern Oregon Dragway

MEDFORD, Ore. - In the opening rounds of qualifying at the Snap-On Valley Thunder sponsored by News Channel 5 event being hosted by Southern Oregon Dragway, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Morgan Lucas and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Bucky Austin qualified in the top spot in their respective classes.

Lucas, of Riverside, Calif., outran the field with a pass of 5.487 seconds at 255.62 mph to take the pole in Top Alcohol Dragster. While in Top Alcohol Funny Car, Fife, Wash., resident Austin made a 5.840-second, 248.46-mph run to take his fifth pole of the year in NHRA's Northwest Division in his class.

Top qualifiers in other classes were Jirka Kaplan of Calgary, Alta., in Comp Eliminator; Bob Mazzolini of Riverside Calif., in Super Stock and Sarah Norsworthy of Santa Clara, Calif., in Stock Eliminator.

Gates at Southern Oregon Dragway will open Saturday at 8 a.m. Qualifying is set to continue at 10 a.m., with final eliminations scheduled to follow at 2 p.m. Final eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car are scheduled for 5 p.m. Tickets for Saturday's racing action are $17 for adults and $5 for children 7-13.
