Callaway, Williams close out NHRA West Central Division in winner's circle

EARLVILLE, Iowa - In the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series presented by Steel Mart of Dubuque and Winnebago Industries at Tri-State Raceway, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Lee Callaway and Top Alcohol Funny Car competitor Kirk Williams each earned their second wins of the season. Callaway defeated defending TAD division champion David Wells, while Williams took out the division's defending TAFC champion, Cy Chesterman, in a repeat of his victory here a year ago.

Channelview, Texas, resident Callaway won the final at the starting line, laying down a 5.658-second, 252.95-mph pass to Wells's quicker 5.649-second effort. However, Callaway's .453-second reaction time was better then Wells's .491-second r.t. This was Callaway's second win in as many races. He won last month at the Nebraska Motorplex in Scribner, Neb.

Williams won what became a pedaling contest with Chesterman when both cars lost power past the half-track mark. Williams' pass of 6.901 seconds at 190.96 mph was enough to get around Chesterman's 7.115-second, 137.82-mph lap. For Williams, of Glendive, Mont., this was the fifth consecutive final-round appearance of the season. His other win came at Douglas International Raceway in Wyoming.

In other racing action, Comp Eliminator competitor Doug Engels of Watertown, S.D., earned his first victory of the season as did defending division Super Street champion Steve Domingues of Derby, Kan. Scott Dugdale of Circle Pines, Minn., took home his second consecutive trophy in Stock.

Rounding out the competition was Brent Voges of Defiance, Mo., in Super Stock; Jim Hughes of Cave Creek, Ariz., in Super Comp; Scott Zimmerman of Fond Du Lac, Wis., in Super Gas; Curtis Spracklin of Omaha, Neb., in Kerker Sportsman Motorcycle; and Jason Guler of Dubuque, Iowa, in Jr. Dragster.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tri-State Raceway hosts Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series

EARLVILLE, Iowa - Steel Mart of Dubuque and Winnebago Industries present the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Tri-State Raceway, Sept. 6-8. The event is the last of six in NHRA West Central Division Competition. More than 450 drivers will compete in eight classes, including 250-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars.

Coming into the event, the points battles in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car are very close. Only 21 points separate first place from third place in TAD and there are 55 points between the first place TAFC driver and the third place competitor.

Odessa, Texas, resident Alan Bradshaw has driven his TAD to three consecutive final round appearances to lead the points. Bradshaw won back-to-back Lucas Oil events at Bandimere Speedway in Denver and at Douglas International Raceway in Douglas, Wyo. Then, in Scribner, Neb., at the Nebraska Motorplex he scored runner-up points. Defending division TAD champion David Wells of LeMars, Iowa, and Gothenburg, Neb., resident Ed Schmeeckle are hot on Bradshaw's heels. However, the event this weekend is the last from which Wells can claim points toward the division championship, while Bradshaw will have the luxury of going to out-of-division races to gain additional points.

In TAFC, Kirk Williams of Glendive, Mont., has been to the final round in four out of the five events he has attended. He took the win in Douglas and was runner-up at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn., at Bandimere Speedway and at Nebraska Motorplex. He currently has the lead over defending division champion, Sioux City, Iowa, resident Cy Chesterman, and Vern Moats of Des Moines, Iowa, who is a 15-time division champion.

Gates at Tri-State Raceway open at 7 a.m. Friday and qualifying and time trials begin at 9 a.m. TAD and TAFC will qualify at 5 p.m. On Saturday, gates open at 8 a.m. and racing continues immediately. TAD and TAFC are scheduled to make qualifying runs at noon and 4 p.m. Gates open at 7 a.m. Sunday and eliminations begin at 8 a.m. TAD and TAFC eliminations begin at noon.

Adult tickets, including pit pass, are $10 Friday, $15 Saturday, and $20 Sunday. A three-day ticket is $40 and children 6-12 are $5 each day.

The event is part of a 45-race, $6.5 million series contested across the country. Drivers in all classes, including Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street, are competing for a part of a $561,000 champions' purse. They will earn points leading to national and divisional titles.

Tri-State Raceway is located 30 miles west of Dubuque on Hwy. 20 at exit 285. Tri-State Raceway is on the south side of highway. For more information, call the track or visit the web site, www.TriStateRaceway.com.
