Sunday Eliminations:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
White takes second win in two weeks, Wilson covers field

TAFC winner Marc White

STANTON, Mich. - Marc White scored his second win in as many weeks while Jeff Wilson picked up his first win of the season at the Bar's Leaks Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event presented by Auto Value at Mid-Michigan Motorplex.

White, who drove his Etterman Racing Top Alcohol Funny Car to victory last week at the Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing, took out the current division champion Chuck Cheeseman in the semifinals for the right to face the number one qualifier Jeff Craig in the finals. White's 6.001-second pass at 229.82 mph was enough to defeat Craig, who suffered engine problems and clocked in at 9.839 seconds, 86.42 mph.

"We're on a mini-roll with last week's win," said White when asked about the weekend. "The fans were outstanding here. Saturday's crowd was unbelievable. The track was a little tricky but that's going to happen when it's as hot and humid as it was this weekend."

TAD winner Jeff Wilson

Wilson, who set both ends of the track record in his ABC Top Alcohol Dragster in qualifying, worked his way through round 1 and 2 taking out Tim Rudy and Dave Hirata on his way to the final. Wilson was to face Gary Ward who was unable to make the final round when he suffered mechanical problems in the semi-finals.

"When your number one qualifier and heading to winner's circle you had a good weekend," said the Winfield, Mo., resident. "We lucked out in the final, but the team did a great job all weekend. I think we had low E.T. (elapsed time) every round."

Wilson lost a blower belt in his final round bye and coasted to an 11.665-second pass. Wilson set the track E.T. and mph record for Top Alcohol Dragster in qualifying with a run of 5.516 seconds at 253.73 mph.

David Billingsley took the win in Comp Eliminator over Steve Johnson while Michigan resident, Bobby Rashid out ran Mike Walter in the Super Stock final. Other winner's included Donald Holmes in Stock; Forrest Lipke in Super Comp; David Connolly in Super Gas; Robert Richardson in Super Street; and Mike Knapp in Pro Stock Snowmobile.

The NHRA North Central Division makes its next stop at Indianapolis Raceway Park on July 4th for a one-day event to finish up their mid-May event that was postponed due to weather.

Event preview:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NHRA Drag Racing comes to Mid Michigan Motorplex

STANTON, Mich. - Mid Michigan Motorplex will host its first NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event June 21-23. The event is the third of six in NHRA North Central Division competition and is part of a nation-wide 45-race series.

More than 500 racers are expected to compete at the Bar's Leaks NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series presented by Auto Value. Classes include 260-mph Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD) and Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC), Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. Drivers are competing for points leading to divisional and national championships.

Racing action at Route 66 Raceway got no further than qualifying before being called off. During those runs, Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD) pilot Keith Stark let it be known that his team was ready to run quick and fast. The Danville, Ill., resident made a 5.307-second, 273.94-mph pass. That speed is the fifth fastest of all-time for the class. Time will tell if other TAD teams in the division can keep up with Stark this season.

There are several TAD drivers who have the potential to post big numbers. Dave Hirata of Lowell, Ind.; Bill Reichert of Owosso, Mich.; Jeff Wilson of Winfield, Mo.; and Shawn Bowen of Grand Blanc, Mich., are all threats to win any event but after the single qualifying run the class made in Joliet, only Reichert joined Stark in the eight-car field. The rest of the field was made up of out-of-division racers.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC) qualifying at Route 66, Glendale Heights, Ill., resident Marc White was the top qualifier, running more than three-tenths of a second quicker (5.648) than the No. 2 man, Jeff Craig of Muncie, Ind. White will need to run those kinds of numbers consistently this season if he is to reclaim the division title from Galena, Ohio's Chuck Cheeseman, and fend off relative new-comer Todd Veney of Indianapolis.

The division fared a little better in Indianapolis, getting through the first elimination rounds of TAD and TAFC. While the first round of TAFC went pretty much as expected, TAD was full of upsets. The No. 8 qualifier, Ben Marshall of Tipp City, Ohio, beat No. 1 qualifier Russ Lindert from Manteno, Ill. Defending division champion Reichert was beaten by Plymouth, Mich., resident Jeff Bohr, and Hirata, who is among the fastest cars in the class, also lost in the first round.

Gates at Mid Michigan Motorplex open at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday. Qualifying and time trials begin at 11 a.m. Friday, with TAD and TAFC running at 5 p.m. Saturday, final qualifying and time trials begin at 9 a.m. TAD and TAFC are scheduled at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Eliminations begin Sunday at 9 a.m. TAD and TAFC will run first round at 1 p.m.

Shirley Muldowney and Bruce Litton will be on-hand Saturday for a Top Fuel exhibition at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Other exhibition vehicles include Jet Cars and Wheel Standers.

Tickets for the Bar's Leaks NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series race presented by Auto Value are $15 Friday, $25 Saturday and $20 Sunday. A three-day ticket is $50 and children 6-12 are $5 each day. Pit Passes are included with each ticket.
