Bozzelli repeats and Manzo makes it three straight
Reading, Pa. - Cliff Bozzelli in Top Alcohol Dragster and Frank Manzo in Top Alcohol Funny Car both earned wins at Maple Grove Raceway's Coca Cola NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series race.
Bozzelli of Absecon, N.J., had suffered losses in two previous final rounds in NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series action coming into this weekend. The third time was a charm for Bozzelli as his 5.531-second, 256.99-mph pass, earned him the win lights as he repeated as event winner at Maple Grove Raceway.
Bob Newberry's 5.695-second, 251.30-mph run was quicker than Manzo's 5.705, 251.91 mph run in the finals in Top Alcohol Funny Car. But the difference was in reaction times as Manzo cut a .471 second reaction time, .042-second better than Newberry of Schenectady, N.Y., to earn his third straight win at the track in divisional competition.
Winners in other categories are Jonathan Aloisio of West Chester, Pa., in Comp; Steve Smith of Homer, N.Y., in Super Stock; Mike Farrell of East Nassau, N.Y., in Stock; Kent Hanley of New Town, Conn., in Super Comp; Vicki Beam of Honeybrook, Pa., in Super Gas, and Dustin Richardson of Woodburn, In., in Super Street.
NHRA Northeast Division competition of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series makes its next stop on June 7-9 in Delmar, Del., at U.S. 13 Dragway.

Kosky and Newberry top qualifiers at Maple Grove
Reading, Pa. - Mike Kosky and Bob Newberry are leading the fields in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car at the Coca Cola NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Maple Grove Raceway.
Kosky's first-round pass at 5.469-seconds, 259.21-mph, held through two rounds of qualifying to give him pole-position going into round one of eliminations tomorrow.
Bob Newberry of Schenectady, N.Y., is the top qualifier in Top Alcohol Funny Car after a 5.702-second, 251.06-mph pass.
Putting pressure on Kosky and Newberry tomorrow will be Cliff Bozzelli of Absecon, N.J., and Frank Manzo of Morganville, N.J. Both Bozzelli and Manzo are the defending event winners at Maple Grove Raceway, and also the 2001 NHRA Northeast Division Champions in their respected classes. Bozzelli has three division championships overall, while Manzo was the 2001 Top Alcohol Funny Car National Champion, and has seven national and 11 division championships.
Frank Aragona Jr., of Franklin Square, N.Y., in Comp; Joseph Scott of Sunbury, Pa., in Super Stock; and Rich Aman of West Creek, N.J.; in Stock, are also seeded No. 1 in their respected classes after qualifying.
Racing from the Coca-Cola NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Maple Grove Raceway continues tomorrow beginning with eliminations in Super Street at 8:30 a.m. Gates open tomorrow at 8 a.m., with round one of Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car scheduled for noon. NHRA Northeast Division kicks off season
Reading, Pa. - NHRA's Northeast division began its racing season today at the Coca-Cola NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Maple Grove Raceway with qualifying and time trials.
Racers will be looking to set the tone for the season this weekend at Maple Grove Raceway, as the track hosts the first of seven NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events in the Northeast. Last year, seven of the eight event winners from this event, went on to finish first or second in their respected divisions, including four division and one national championship.
Top qualifiers after day one of qualifying are Don Stratton Jr. of Beloit, Ohio, in Comp; Richard Oakes of Woolwich Township, N.J., in Super Stock; and Rich Aman of West Creek, N.J. in Stock.
Gates open Saturday at 8 a.m., with final qualifying and time trials scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled for 3 and 6 p.m. Round one of eliminations for Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, and Super Gas are scheduled for 12:30 p.m., Comp at 5:30 p.m.

Maple Grove Raceway to host Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series
The Coca-Cola NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Maple Grove Raceway will mark the start of NHRA's Northeast division's 2002 season. The event, May 24-26, will feature more than 400 drivers in eight racing categories including 260-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars .
Top Alcohol Funny Car drivers will again have their hands full, competing against defending national and divisional champion Frank Manzo. Manzo, who resides in Morganville, N.J., has seven TAFC national championships, including five in the last five years. He also has 11 division titles to his credit. On his way to the 2001 titles, Manzo won five divisional races and six NHRA national events.
However, Schenectady, N.Y., resident Bob Newberry has already run several NHRA events and is always tough competition for Manzo. This will be the first divisional race for both Manzo and Newberry in the young season. On the national event level, Manzo has one win this season and Newberry scored runner-up points.
In Top Alcohol Dragster, defending division champion Cliff Bozzelli has yet to make an appearance on the divisional level, but the Absecon, N.J., resident has been runner-up at two NHRA national events. Bozzelli won here a year ago on his way to five divisional and one national event wins.
Currently leading the Northeast division TAD points is Art Gallant, followed by Billy Gibson. Gallant won an out-of-division race at Gainesville Raceway in Florida, and Gibson was runner-up at Orlando Speed World Dragway in Florida.
Gates at Maple Grove Raceway open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday and continue at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. TAD and TAFC will get two qualifying passes on Saturday at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Eliminations begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. First round of eliminations for TAD and TAFC are scheduled at noon.Adult tickets are $15 Friday, $17 Saturday and $22 Sunday. Children, 11 and under, are $6 Friday, $8 Saturday and $8 Sunday. A three-day pass for adults is $50 and $20 for children.
The event is part of a 45-race, $6.5 million series contested across the country. Drivers are competing for a part of a $561,000 champions' purse. They will earn points leading to national and division titles as well as a berth on the team that will represent the Northeast division at the Jeg's Allstar event in September.
The other classes competing in the event are Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2002 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.SEALED POWER LOW QUALIFIER BONUS -- a $220,500 overall bonus fund from Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power brand to the low qualifiers at each of the 45 Lucas Oil events and the 23 NHRA national events: $1,250 each in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car; $400 each in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock; and $200 in Stock. (TAD and TAFC compete at 16 of 23 national events.)
JEG'S ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $100,000 point fund from Jeg's High Performance. The 2002 Jeg's Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2002 Jeg's Allstars, held in conjunction with the NHRA Nationals in Chicago, Sept. 26-29, 2002. Points are based on in-division races only.
The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $20,000 towing fund to get to the event.
FEATURES: More than 500 drivers in the eight racing categories. Eight-car fields in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, featuring five-second, 260 mph side-by-side racing.
