Sunday Eliminations:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Mission Accomplished for Shields; Manzo still unbeaten

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - In the final results from the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event being held at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, Duane Shields and Frank Manzo both emerged victorious in their respective fields.

In Top Alcohol Dragster, the long trip eastward for West Coast racer Shields paid huge dividends when the Las Vegas, Nev., runner took out Fran Monaghan Jr., of Meadowbrook, Pa., in the class final. In the final, Shields used a .510 reaction time and 5.582-second pass at 259.26 mph to best Monaghan who laid down a 5.668-second pass at 252.43 mph.

This was a key win for Shields who is currently in a tight battle for national championship points with Northeast Division regulars Art Gallant of Boxboro, Mass., and defending NHRA Northeast Division champion Cliff Bozzelli of Absecon, N.J. Both Bozzelli and Gallant were eliminated in the opening round of competition today, widening Shield's points lead by several rounds.

This is Shield's third divisional win of the season and his second victory of the year at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. In May, Shields won the Matco Tools Supernationals over Art Gallant.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, defending NHRA National Champion Manzo of Morganville, N.J., earned his sixth NHRA Northeast Division title of the year when he defeated Bob Newberry of Schenectady, N.Y. In the final Newberry got the jump off the line with .414 reaction time to Manzo's .450, but it wasn't enough to hold to off the defending champ, who ran a 5.835-second pass at 252.43 to Newberry's plagued 6.542 pass at 153.18 mph.

This win helps Manzo gain valuable points to pad his lead on both the national and divisional level. Manzo is currently battling for national points with Southeast Division drivers Von Smith of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Jay Payne of Claremont, Calif., as well as Northwest Divisional runner Bucky Austin of Fife, Wash.

Winners in other categories are defending NHRA national champion Don Stratton of Beloit, Ohio in Comp Eliminator; Don Ciccarone of Lindenburg, Pa., in Super Stock; Bryan Valentine of Thornwood, N.Y., in Stock Eliminator; Tom Ciccarone, Jr. of West Chester, Pa., in Super Comp; Chuck Rothermel of Kinderhook, N.Y., in Super Gas; and Steve Taxis of Old Bridge, N.J., in Super Street.
