NHRA Motorsports Museum names new director
12/07/2002
Sam Jackson, former vice president of marketing and communications for SEMA, has been named executive director of the NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona. Steve Gibbs, former museum director and current NHRA vice president and museum board member, made the announcement Dec. 6 during a press conference at the PRI trade show.
"Sam Jackson brings a lot of experience and enthusiasm to the museum," said Gibbs, the museum's director since it opened in 1998. "He has successfully headed non-profits, has a great sense for marketing and communications, and he's a total car guy. Sam's a perfect fit. With my continuing on as a vice president and board member, this will give the museum continuity. This is truly a great day for the museum."
Gibbs, an NHRA employee since 1969, said Jackson will begin immediately on a variety of projects, including new exhibits, sponsorships, special events, and the NHRA Hot Rod Reunions in Bakersfield, Calif., and Bowling Green, Ky.
"I can't wait to roll up my sleeves and get to work," Jackson said. "The museum is a hidden gem and has incredible historical and cultural importance. Steve Gibbs, [curator] Greg Sharp, and the museum staff have done an amazing job. I want to use the foundations they've built to further the museum's visibility, relevance, and activities to make it an increasingly popular attraction."
Jackson has had a successful career in the recreation and automotive industries. Most recently, as vice president of sales and marketing for AquaTex Industries, he was instrumental in bringing a new product to market that could revolutionize protective clothing used in various professions, from fire fighting to race car driving. Jackson was vice president of marketing and communications for SEMA in the late 1990s. He has an extensive background in marketing and publishing, and he has been an active car hobbyist for many years. Jackson, who earned his MBA at Claremont Graduate University, lives with his wife and two sons in Claremont, Calif.
