Following a $21.5 million renovation and expansion project, Gateway Int'l Raceway hosted the inaugural Sears Craftsman Nationals in 1997. Because of the oppressive heat and humidity experienced in 1998, the 1999 event was changed to a unique Thursday-Saturday format with all qualifying and eliminations held at night. Last year, the event returned to a traditional Thursday-Sunday day format. Doug Kalitta won Top Fuel to again keep hometown Budweiser-backed favorite Kenny Bernstein from the winner's circle here. Tony Pedregon won Funny Car, Warren Johnson won Pro Stock for the 85th time to tie Bob Glidden's career mark, and eighteen-year-old G.T.
