ENGLISHTOWN -- Jim Yates will lead the charge of the top Pro Stock drivers in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series as they battle for a lucrative payday during the 18th annual NHRA Pro Stock Challenge, a bonus event scheduled for May 18 and run in conjunction with the 33rd annual Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions.
The $76,000 NHRA Pro Stock Challenge is a special race within a race that features an eliminations bracket for the eight Pro Stock drivers who have earned the most points in qualifying during the last 24 NHRA national events.
The Challenge winner will earn $50,000, the runner-up $10,000, the two semifinalists $3,000 each, and the four first-round finishers $2,500 each. A driver who wins the NHRA Pro Stock Challenge and the SuperNationals Pro Stock title will earn a $25,000 bonus. Only four Pro Stock drivers have doubled: Warren Johnson (1993), Darrell Alderman (1991), Larry Morgan (1989), and Bob Glidden (1987 and 1988).
Yates earned the number-one seed for the 2002 event by qualifying No. 1 at four national events during the Challenge series, which began at last season's SuperNationals and concluded with the recent Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac. In addition, Yates, the defending champion and making his 10th appearance in the special event, qualified in the top five at 19 of the 24 events. He will face No. 8 qualifier Mark Osborne in the first round.
The NHRA Pro Stock Challenge rounds are scheduled for 12:30 p.m., 2:45 p.m., and 4:40 p.m.
